Vasopressin Tannate. Vasopressin tannate (Pitressin Tannatc) is a water-in.soluble tannate of vasopressin administered intramuscularly (I.S to 5 pre.ssor units daily) for its prolonged duration of action by the slow release of vasopre.s-sin. It is particularly useful for patients who have diabetes insipidus, but it should never be used intravenously. [Pg.847]

Diabetes insipidus is treated by replacing the antidiuretic hormone by administering desmopressin acetate (DDAVP), desmopressin (Stimate), lypressin (Diapid), vasopressin (aqueous Pitressin), and vasopressin tannate/oil (Pitressin Tannate). [Pg.342]

Vasopressin (Pitressin) may be administered either subcutaneously or intramuscularly. It has a duration of action of 2 to 8 hours. Vasopressin tannate (pitressin tannate) is a suspension and should be injected intramuscularly only. It has a duration of action of 2 to 3 days. Desmopressin acetate (DDAVP) is used topically. Lypressin is administered as an intranasal spray. All these agents may be used in the treatment of central diabetes insipidus (vasopressin sensitive) (see also Figure 102). [Pg.400]

Water deprivation and exogenous ADH administration are two diagnostic tests that can be used to differentiate neurogenic from nephrogenic DI. The latter test is pursued only after there is a failure to produce concentrated urine in response to the water-deprivation test (Schott 1998). Until recently, the most commonly used form of exogenous ADH was a water-insoluble tannate of arginine vasopressin extracted from the posterior pituitary and suspended in peanut oil. This preparation is no longer available. Currently,... [Pg.168]
