Initial Extraction Technique Continuous extraction apparatus was employed, including an extractor designed to contain the starting plant materials, a distillation flask to hold the solvent mixture, the flask being equipped with a reflux condenser, a drip device to facilitate the removal of the volatilized mixture from the condenser and to percolate it through the continuous extractor, and a Soxhiet type return. Means for heating the continuous extraction system were provided.

Tannate Complexation. Certain dmgs, those that contain amine groups, complex readily with tannic acid. Such complexes release the dmg gradually and uniformly. The rate seems to be affected by the pH and the electrolytes present in the gastrointestinal tract. At lower pH, the dmg is released more quickly. Other complexing compounds have also been used. 

HaO). Quinine salicylate, 2[B. CgH4(OH)(COOH)]. HaO, forms colourless needles, m.p. 187° (dec.), which slowly become pink in air. It is soluble in water (1 in 77 at 25°), alcohol (1 in 11 at 25°), or chloroform (1 in 37 at 25°). The foregoing are the most important quinine salts used in medicine, but many other salts have been used, e.g., the tannate, formate, valerate, ethylcarbonate, lactate, cacodylate, etc., as well as double salts such as quinine bismuth iodide. Descriptions of many of these salts will be found in the British Pharmaceutical Codex for 1934. 

Preparation of Alkaloid III Tannate 20 g of Alkaloid III was dissolved in 200 ml of isopropyl alcohol at room temperature and a mixture of 30 g of tannic acid dissolved in 300 ml of isopropyl alcohol, maintained at 40 to 50 C was added thereto with rapid stirring. The mixture was cooled to 20 C, filtered and the precipitate dried at about 80 C. There was thus obtained 33.5 g of the tannate salt of Alkaloid III, as a pale yellow amorphous powder, relatively insoluble in water, and having an indefinite melting point.

Freshwater Muds—Dispersed Systems. The pH value of low-pH muds may range from 7.0 to 9.5. Low-pH muds include spud muds, bentonite-treated muds, natural muds, phosphate-treated muds, organic thinned muds (red muds, lignite muds, lignosulfate muds), and organic colloid-treated muds. The pH value of high pH muds, such as alkaline tannate-treated mud, is above 9.5. 

Quebracho-treated freshwater muds were used in drilling at shallow depths. The name of red mud comes from the deep red color imparted to the mud by quebracho. Muds treated with a mixture of lignite and quebracho, or a mixture of alkaline organic polyphosphate chemicals (alkaline-tannate treated muds), are also included in the quebracho treated muds. The quebracho thinners are very effective at low concentrations, and offer good viscosity and filtration control. The pH of red" muds should be 8.5 to 10 mud temperature should be lower than 230°F. 

In boilers in which tannin blends are employed both as oxygen scavengers and as sludge dispersants, the magnetite film may also incorporate iron tannates. 

The resistance of BW tannins (sodium tannates) to thermal breakdown is aided by the presence of sufficient alkali, and optimum stability is conferred at an alkalinity tannin ratio of 2 1.

Quebracho-treated freshwater muds were used in shallow depths. It is also referred to as red mud because of the deep red color. Quebracho acts as a thinner. Polyphosphates are also added when quebracho is used. Quebracho is active at low concentrations and consists of tannates.
