To get a composite of all the beach sand in the United States, Patterson wrote post offices every 30 miles along the East and Southern coasts. Enclosing bags and directions, he asked them to collect one and one-half pounds of sand and send it to Cal Tech. He and Laurie, together with their children, piled into a car and one summer drove from Baja to Vancouver Island collecting sand from the West Coast.

Karen, Jean and Katy enjoy a remarkable camaraderie and have been successful in their efforts to develop resources for people with MCS on Vancouver Island. They had almost nothing in common prior to MCS, and much of their advocacy work is done individually. Just knowing the other two are nearby and persevering helps to energize them. 

Jean is a co-founder of Ecological Health Alliance, a group providing education and support to people with MCS in Victoria. Two years ago the group joined with a national organization and is now the British Columbia branch of the Allergy and Environmental Health Association of Canada. A native of Vancouver, Jean has lived on Vancouver Island with her husband for more than forty years. 

While I lived in Canada, my mother died after a long bout with cancer. She was laid to rest, and then eventually Vancouver Island, lost in swirling snow, had fallen behind us as if by a series of telescoping leaps. At last our journey loomed One by one the barriers to our entry into the anticipated magical world fell away, until we came to this indolent moment, our first day on the river. From my journal ...

Direct evidence of ocean hydrates has been obtained using in situ Raman measurements in Barkley Canyon, off Vancouver Island (Hester, 2007). The occurrence of sH in natural hydrate deposits has been inferred from gas analyses of recovered core samples from the Gulf of Mexico (Sassen and Macdonald, 1994 Yousuf et al., 2004) and confirmed by diffraction and NMR for samples from Barkley Canyon (Pohlman et al., 2005 Lu et al., 2007).

For a number of German chernozems, up to 45% of SOM was identified as charcoal, which mostly occurred in the light fraction (Schmidt et al., 1999). In Japanese andosols the contribution of charred plant fragments in the light fractions ranged from 3.4% to 33% (Shindo et al., 2004). In coastal temperate forest sites of southern Vancouver Island, Canada, BC characteristics were detected in the water-floatable fraction separated from mineral soils (Preston et al., 2002). 

Together with a fellow patient I left for Vancouver Island, Canada, for three months in the summer of 2004. Staying in the relatively clean air did me a lot of good among other things, my vision...
