The bulk stmcture of the catalyticaHy active phase is not completely known and is under debate in the Hterature (125,131—133). The central point of controversy is whether (Valone or in combination with other phases is the most catalyticaHy active for the conversion of butane to maleic anhydride. The heart of this issue concerns the role of stmctural disorder in the bulk and how it arises in the catalyst (125,134,135). Most researchers agree that the catalysts with the highest activity and selectivity ate composed mainly of (Vthat exhibits a clustered or distorted platelet morphology (125). It is also generaHy acknowledged that during operation of the catalyst, the bulk oxidation state of the vanadium in the catalyst remains very close to the +4 valence state (125).

In 1979, an elegant proof of the existence was provided by Levy [10]. He demonstrated that the universal variational functional for the electron-electron repulsion energy of an A -representable trial 1-RDM can be obtained by searching all antisymmetric wavefunctions that yield a fixed D. It was shown that the functional does not require that a trial function for a variational calculation be associated with a ground state of some external potential. Thus the v-representability is not required, only Al-representability. As a result, the 1-RDM functional theories of preceding works were unified. A year later, Valone [19] extended Levy s pure-state constrained search to include all ensemble representable 1-RDMs. He demonstrated that no new constraints are needed in the occupation-number variation of the energy functional. Diverse con-strained-search density functionals by Lieb [20, 21] also afforded insight into this issue. He proved independently that the constrained minimizations exist.

A third catalytic system was proposed more recently and based on vanadium aluminum oxynitrides (VALON) [30]. The maximum acrylonitrile yield reported was about 30%, but with acrylonitrile productivity four times higher than for V/ Sb/W/Al/O catalysts and one order of magnitude than for Mo/V/Nb/Te/O. Other companies have studied and developed proprietary formulations but, in general, catalytic systems belong either to the antimonates family (Rhodia, BASF, Nitto, Monsanto) [31-33] orto the molybdates family. 

The antibacterial effect of honey derived from Kanuka and Manuka blossom against Staphylococcus aureus was shown and, more recently, Manuka honey was shown to be active against Helicobacter pylori.
