Using Excel Logical Functions

In order to have Excel compute the average, we use the AVERAGE function in the following manner. In cell B16, we type =AVERAGE(B5 B14), and similarly in cell C16, we type =AVERAGE(C5 C14). 

we will make a tide for the standard deviation calculation by simply typing in cell B18 STAND. DEV. 

To compute the standard deviation for the Group A findings, in cell B19 type =STDEV(B5 B14), and similarly to calculate the standard deviation for the Group B findings, in cell C19 type =STDEV(C5 C14). Note that we used the function STDEV and the appropriate data range. 

In this section, we will look at some of Excel s logical functions. These are functions that allow you to test various conditions when programming formulas to analyze data. Excel s logical functions and their descriptions are shown in Table 14.6. 

Excel also offers relational or comparison opetacois that allow for testing of relative magnitude of various arguments. These relational operators are shown in Table 14.7. We will use Example 14.5 to demonstrate the use of Excel s logical functions and relational operators.

The Excel logical AND and IF functions are used to automatically highlight the solvents that meet these targets. 

There are several useful logical functions in Excel. IF is a common feature. Figure A. 12 represents the function =IF(A1[Pg.435]

Logical functions allow you to use different formulas in a cell, depending on the values in other cells. The logical functions provided with Excel are IF, AND, OR and NOT. The latter three are almost always used in combination with the IF function, as are the comparison operators. 

Using Excel s logical functions, create a list that shows the correspondii open and closed position of the check valve (see Figure 14.9). 

Excel 2000 provides more than 300 worksheet functions, in 11 categories Engineering, Financial, Date Time, Information, Math Trig, Statistical, Lookup Reference, Database, Text, Logical, External. This book uses functions from seven of those categories. This appendix lists selected worksheet functions by category. In Appendix B, the functions are listed alphabetically, with comments, examples and related functions. 

In this section we will summarize some of the most useful mathematical operations available in Excel. This section is merely for your information, just to give you an idea of what is available it is certainly not meant to be memorized. There are many more functions, not listed here, that are mainly used in connection with statistics, with logic (Boolean algebra), with business and database applications, with the manipulation of text strings, and with conversions between binary, octal, decimal and hexadecimal notation. 

VBA extends the usefulness of spreadsheets by allowing the programmer to include loops and logic decisions. Input and output is done through the spreadsheet, and the VBA editor is accessed through Excel. Most math symbols and functions are the same as in Excel. The basic math operations are +, -, (multiply), /, and (exponentiation). Math functions are written as Function (variable). For exanple, the cosine of x is written as Cos (x).
