Use in coatings

Nltropropane. As much as 9100 t of 2-nitropropane once were consumed for use in coatings annually. Concern about toxicity and a general movement to low volatile organic compound (VOC) coatings have resulted in almost the complete disappearance of this use for 2-nitropropane. However, derivatives such as 2-meth5l-2-nitro-l-propanol (used in tire cord adhesive) and 2-amino-2-methyl-l-propanol (a pigment dispersant and buffer), have served as an outlet for 2-nitropropane production. [Pg.104]

Calcium carbonate, available both from natural sources and as precipitated forms (see Calcium compounds), is most useful in coating because of purity and high brightness, ie, 90—95%. Ground carbonates from marble deposits have high purity levels as do the carbonates from some chalk deposits. [Pg.10]

A great number of other aHyl compounds have been prepared, especially aHyl ethers and aHyl ether derivatives of carbohydrates and other polymers. They are made by the reaction of hydroxyl groups with aHyl chloride in the presence of alkaU (1). Polymerizations and copolymerizations are generally slow and incomplete. Products have only limited use in coatings, inks, and specialties. Properties of a few aHyl ethers are given in Table 10. [Pg.88]

Styrene—Butadiene Latex. SB latex is used in coatings, carpet backing, paper adhesives, cement additives, and latex paint. [Pg.487]

Ionic polymers are also formulated from TDI and MDI (43). Poly(urethane urea) and polyurea ionomers are obtained from divalent metal salts of /)-aminohen2oic acid, MPA, dialkylene glycol, and 2,4-TDI (44). In the case of polyureas, the glycol extender is omitted. If TDI is used in coatings apphcations, it is usually converted to a derivative to lower the vapor pressure. A typical TDI prepolymer is the adduct of TDI with trimethyl olpropane (Desmodur L). Carbodiimide-modified MDI offers advantages in polyester-based systems because of improved hydrolytic stabihty (45). Moisture cure systems based on aromatic isocyanates are also available. [Pg.350]

Other Coatings Resins. A wide variety of other resin types are used in coatings. PhenoHc resins, ie, resins based on reaction of phenols and formaldehyde, have been used in coatings for many years. Use has been declining but there are stUl significant appHcations, particularly with epoxy resins in interior can coatings. [Pg.341]

There are a number of ways to obtain color in a ceramic material (1). First, certain transition-metal ions can be melted into a glass or dispersed in a ceramic body when it is made. Although suitable for bulk ceramics, this method is rarely used in coatings because adequate tinting strength and purity of color caimot be obtained this way. [Pg.425]

Thermoplastic polyamides are used in coatings to modify alkyd resins (qv) in thixotropic systems (238) and to plasticize nitroceUulose lacquers (239). DETA-taH oil fatty acid-based polyamides are suggested for use as corrosion inhibitors in alkyd paints (240). Printing inks for fiexo-gravure appHcation on certain paper, film and foil webs rely on EDA- and PDA-based polyamides for their specific performance (241). [Pg.47]

Naphthenates of cobalt, manganese, calcium, copper, iron, zinc, and zirconium are used as driers in printing inks. Their use in coatings is declining as a result of the use of higher metal content synthetic driers and the overall trend to latex paint in architectural coatings. [Pg.222]
