Urban Yokohama

In urban areas like Yokohama, Japan, the concentrations of ferric and manganous ions in rain water are generally in the range of 0.2-2.0 yM and 0.02-0.2 yM respectively, and the pH value of rain water is between 4 and 5. Therefore, a high S(IV) oxidation rate in rain water is expected from the data in Table II. A half life of several minutes to an hour is predicted. Furthermore, S(IV) in rain water is oxidized during sampling, making the measurement of S(IV) in rain water difficult. This fast oxidation rate must be one of the reasons why few reports are found on the measurement of S(IV) in rain water.

Average tellurium concentration of urban air was reported as follows Rolla (Missouri, USA) 0.46, Yokohama (Japan) 0.12 ng Te/m [2,3]. In the USA tellurium was not detected in tap water [4]. The tellurium concentrations of meats, cereals, fats and oils, vegetables and 6uits, and hospital diets were 4.2, 4.8, 1.8, 1.1, and 0.44 mg Te/kg substance, respectively. From these tellurium concentrations, the dietary intake of tellurium from food has been estimated to be about 1(X) T.g/day. Since other sources contribute only minor amounts in relation to dietary intake, they also represent an estimate of the total daily intake of teUurium [4]. However, in view of the recent progress in analysis, the mentioned value appears as too high.
