University of Szeged

The molecular events of contraction are powered by the ATPase activity of myosin. Much of our present understanding of this reaction and its dependence on actin can be traced to several key discoveries by Albert Szent-Gyorgyi at the University of Szeged in Hungary in the early 1940s. Szent-Gyorgyi showed that solution viscosity is dramatically increased when solutions of myosin and actin are mixed. Increased viscosity is a manifestation of the formation of an actomyosin complex.

The final chapter in Volume 69 is concerned with the synthesis, stereochemistry, and transformation of cyclopentane-, cyclohexane-, cyclohep-tane-, and cyclooctane-fused 1,3-oxazines, 1,3-thiazines, and pyrimidines and is authored by Professors Ferenc Ftilop, Gabor Bernath, and Kalevi Pihlaja from the Universities of Szeged in Hungary and Turku in Finland. This is a field which has shown rapid development over the last dozen years because of the increased availability of spectroscopic and other analytical methods allowing definition of the precise steric chemistry of these compounds.

In 1951, I was sent to the University of Szeged to become a high school teacher of chemistry and physics. I didn t mind that I wasn t even asked about my preference because I always liked sciences. My dream, though, had been to become an astronomer. At the university my speedy high school education successfully withstood the test and not only did I keep up with my peers, often I could even help them in their studies.
