He received the B.Sc. degree (1966) in chemistry from the University of Madras, India, the M.Sc. degree (1968) in chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, India, and the Ph.D. degree (1974) in chemistry from the University of Hawaii, Honolulu.
