One major problem with structural materials is that they crack and weaken as they age. The human body has mechanisms for healing itself if the skin is cut or a bone is broken. However, inanimate materials have had no such mechanisms—until now. Scientists at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) have invented a plastic that automatically heals microscopic cracks before they can develop into large cracks that would degrade the usefulness of the material. This accomplishment was achieved by an interdisciplinary team of scientists including aeronautical engineering professors Scott White and Philippe Geubelle, applied mechanics professor Nancy Sottos, and chemistry professor Jeffrey Moore.

A carbon development program was initiated at the Illinois State Geological Survey (ISGS) and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) to investigate the effects of different carbon types, carbon structures, and carbon surface functional groups on the rate and extent of adsorption of vapor-phase mercury. The results from a study to prepare Illinois coal-based activated carbons are presented. Carbon products were made both in bench- and pilot-scale reactors. 

The work led by the Rogers group at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) shows us the potential to integrate multiple functional sensors into one piece of epidermal tattoos or patch that is both skin friendly and compatible with mechanical stretches (Kim et al, 2011).
