After studying on the Continent, Ramsay taught chemistry and engaged in research at Glasgow and later at University College, Bristol,... [Pg.783]

The construction of science laboratories was one of Beale s priorities. This was accomplished as noted in a description of the school in a 1900 issue of Girl s Realm in the Science Department there is a laboratory for physics and two for chemistry. .. 32 while a new Science wing was added in 1904 that was designed by Millicent Taylor, the woman chemist who linked CLC and University College, Bristol (see Chap. 5).33... [Pg.20]

Fortey and Williams were at University College, Bristol, while Taylor undertook research at Bristol in her spare time. In fact, all three of them were there about the signing period of 1903-1904. But how did word reach the Bristol trio Williams had been a collaborator of Ramsay when Ramsay had been at Bristol (see Chap. 5). As Ramsay was a fervent supporter of women s rights, it is quite possible that he conveyed news of the petition to Williams, who then passed it to her colleagues. [Pg.67]

Both the male and female founders and supporters of University College, Bristol, had been adamant that women were to be admitted from the first as equals to men. However, equal did not mean co-educational The Lectures of the College will be open to the students of both sexes, a part of the lecture room being appropriated to women. Separate classes for women alone will also be held, in which the instruction will be of a more detailed and catechetical kind. 103 Women students occupied a separate sphere, as Marian F. Pease described in 1876 Between lectures we sat in the small women s cloakroom.. .. It was furnished with three or four wooden chairs and a small deal table and with pegs for our heavy cloth waterproofs. .. 104... [Pg.199]

Between 1898 and 1910, Taylor devoted most of her spare time to research work in organic and physical chemistry at University College, Bristol, producing a range of papers in those fields. On weekends, she would often cycle to and from the Bristol chemistry laboratories, an 80-mile round trip.109 She signed the 1904 petition for admission of women to the Chemical Society and the 1909 letter to Chemical News (see Chap. 2). In addition, she was one of the first batch of women to gain admittance to the Chemical Society. [Pg.201]

Originating from Cornwall, Peter Griffiths studied initially at University College, North Wales (1985-88), and subsequently the University of Bristol (PhD, 1991). After post-doctoral positions in Bristol and Stockholm, he moved to a lectureship at Cardiff in 1995. Aged 32, his research interests centre around colloidal systems, in particular polymer/surfactant interactions. [Pg.190]
