This section deals with some of the most astonishing results in all of nonlinear dynamics. The ideas are best introduced by way of an example. [Pg.369]

Plot the graph of the sine map = rsinstA, for 0 r I and 0 x 1, and compare it to the logistic map. Then plot the orbit diagrams for both maps, and list some similarities and differences. [Pg.369]

It has the same shape as the graph of the logistic map. Both curves are smooth, concave down, and have a single maximum. Such maps are called unimodal. [Pg.370]

But there are quantitative differences. For instance, the period-doubling bifurcations occur later in the logistic map, and the periodic windows are thinner.  [Pg.370]

Example 10.6.1 illustrates a powerful theorem due to Metropolis et al. (1973), They considered all unimodal maps of the form x , =rflx,), where f(x) also satisfies /(0) = /(l) = 0. (Forthe precise conditions, see their original paper.) Metropolis et al. proved that as r is varied, the order in which stable periodic solutions appear is independent of the unimodal map being iterated. That is, the periodic attractors always occur in the same sequence, now called the universal or V-sequence. This amazing result implies that the algebraic form of /(%) is irrelevant only its overall shape matters. [Pg.370]

Experiments were conducted during the Metallurgical Project, centered at the University of Chicago, and led by Enrico Fermi. Subcritical assembhes of uranium and graphite were built to learn about neutron multiphcation. In these exponential piles the neutron number density decreased exponentially from a neutron source along the length of a column of materials. There was excellent agreement between theory and experiment. [Pg.212]

Second, Max Dresden, who was both my thesis advisor and loyal friend. As Jay was the perfect teacher of high school physics, so Max was the quintessential physics professor. Max opened my eyes to the deej) mystery we call the universe, and taught me that the path to truth is indistinguishable from the path to beauty. The seminal idea and outline of this book-its major themes, chapters, and overall organization -benefitted greatly from Max s experience and wise counsel. I have followed our bible of ideas ever since Max and I lovingly crafted a skeletal version of it prior to our first meeting with a potential publisher over a decade ago. [Pg.830]

Will, C.M., 1993, Theory and experiment in gravitational physics, (Cambridge University Press, Cambridge), contains descriptions of the various experiments in the field of gravitation. Requires some background in general relativity (for example, path one of the MTW or the book by Weinberg). [Pg.325]

Luo, J. B., Study on the Measurement and Experiments of Thin Film Lubrication," Ph.D. thesis, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, 1994. [Pg.5]

The purpose of this report is to bring the author s model and theory for carbon black reinforcement of rubbers to a conclusion, with additional experiments and discussion. This research consists of three papers (Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3), where the reinforcement of elastomers is generalized with the universal and common concept. Now, preceding the detailed discussion, we would like to discuss the previous concept generally accepted for carbon black reinforcement of rubbers and the author s new model and theory. [Pg.519]

Universities and colleges operate placement services for their graduates, usually at no charge. College science students also malte excellent temporary or part-time laboratory workers while still going to school. They are eager to get experience in the field which will help them get a permanent job when they graduate. [Pg.109]

The College and University Faculty Directorate has been offering hands-on polymer chemistry demonstrations and experiments workshops for faculty for nearly a decade. In addition to this active program, the Directorate also oversees the Curriculum Development Award as well as the Textbook Author Program. Both of these programs are targeted toward increasing the availability of curricular materials in the polymer area. [Pg.77]

The occult sciences a compendium of transcendental doctrine and experiment, embracing an account of magical practices of secret sciences in connection with magic of the professors of magical arts and of modem spiritualism, mesmerism and theosophy. 2nd impression ed. London K. Paul, Trench, Trubner Co. Ltd, 1891 reprint, Secaucus (NJ) University Books, 1974. xii, 292p. [Pg.513]

There is yet another possibility. The general assumption is that the effect of a drug adds to the placebo effect, so that the total improvement that patients experience is the drug effect in addition to the placebo effect. This assumption is implicit in the design of placebo-controlled clinical trials, in which the drug effect is assessed as the difference between the response to the drug and the response to the placebo. Anne Harrington, an historian of science at Harvard University and the London School of Economics, calls it the oil-and-water hypothesis. [Pg.77]
