United States Chemistry concept

Quantitative calculations and qualitative interpretations are fundamental to fully grasp the concepts of chemistry. Quantitative values must include a number and a unit. Two common units of measurement are the conventional (English) system and the metric system. The conventional set of units includes inches, feet, miles, gallons, and pounds. These units, although common in the United States, are not used in science or by most of the world. However, the metric system is becoming more common in the United States. The metric system s base-10 units are easier to use and essential for scientific calculations. However, because most readers of this book are more familiar with the conventional system, it will be necessary to convert to and from the metric system. [Pg.31]

The United States is currently among the leaders in experimental physical chemistry but is experiencing increasing competition from Western Europe and Japan. Frontier research in experimental physical chemistry that leads to the discovery of underlying principles is most often associated with the conception and development of novel instrumentation. The need to design and build unique instrumentation requires ready access to machine shop, and technical support from electronics technicians and instrument makers. Such technical infrastructure is in place and highly valued, particularly in Europe, Japan, and Taiwan, while it has been all but eliminated at most private academic institutions in the United States. The scarcity of this technical infrastructure is a major reason why the United States is among the leaders, rather than the leader, in these fields. [Pg.123]

In 1944, the United States Office of Scientific Research and Development was created with a Board for the Coordination of Malaria Studies to better understand the mode of action of anti-malarials in order to protect United States troops in Southeast Asia, North America and the Pacific. A member of that Board was W. Mansfield Clark (1884-1964), Professor of Physiological Chemistry (1927-1952) at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. His colleague in the department was Leslie Hellerman (1896-1981) whose work focused on metallo-enzyme functions. Hellerman and his student, Marianna Bovarnick (1911-1995), involved themselves in the testing of the biochemical effects of atabrine. Another malaria project was sponsored at Harvard under A. Baird Hastings, chair of the Department of Biological Chemistry, also a member of the Board. In 1912 Lewis accepted a position as dean and chairman of the College of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley. He remained at Berkeley for the rest of his hfe and transformed the chemistry department there into a world-class center for research and teaching. His reforms in the way chemistry was taught, a catalyst for the modernization of chemical education, were widely adopted throughout the United States. Lewis introduced thermodynamics to the curriculum, and his book on the same subject became a classic.
