United Kingdom Listing Authority

In many countries, all additives permitted are summarized in a single list. Examples are relevant regulations in the Scandinavian countries, Germany, and Switzerland. In countries such as the United Kingdom, authorization of food additives is controlled by individual regulations, with reference to specified groups of additives. Some countries have authorizations within product regulations for certain foods. In addition, mixed systems exist, e.g., in the USA. 

In UAE, the Health Authority requests 3 approvals from the listed 20 countries (UAE MOH 1998), namely, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, New Zealand, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, Switzerlemd, United Kingdom and United States.

Health and Safety Legislation in the United Kingdom. The health and safety regulatory provisions fall into 4 categories. There are Acts of Parliament which may be extended and developed by Regulations, both of which may be illustrated by Codes of Practice, Guidance Notes, and authorized and approved lists. 

The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) is responsible for producing, disseminating and enforcing Occupational Exposure Limits in the Republic of Ireland. The natioitel list, when introduced in 1994, was based on the occupational exposure standards for some 700 chemicals applicable in the United Kingdom (EH 40), with the inclusion of additional chemicals contained in tiie US (ACGIH) list but not in the UK list. 

In the UK, the United Kingdom Ethics Committees Authority (UKECA) is responsible for establishing, recognising and monitoring ethics committees. The Authority may establish ethics committees to act for the entire UK or for each area of the UK and the description or class of clinical trial in relation to which it may act. The categories are listed in Table 6.3. 

Other useful lists of accessions are issued by the libraries of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority at Risley and Harwell, and by the Science Museum in London. 

The author list of the present issue brings together scientists from two continents, namely Europe and America. You will find two contributions each from Brazil and the United States, and one contribution each from Germany, France, and the United Kingdom. We hope to show with the distribution of authors that SPR Chemical Modelling is a truly global project.
