Tetiyl. 2,4,6-Trinitrophenylmethylm tramine (tetryl) was used ia pressed form, mostly as a booster explosive and as a base charge ia detonators and blasting caps because of its sensitivity to initiation by primary explosives and its relatively high energy content. Properties are presented ia Table 11 (173). Batch and continuous processes for the production of tetryl have been developed. Production Controls The nature of the produc tion control logic differs greatly between continuous and batch plants. A good example of produc tion control in a continuous process is refineiy optimization. From the assay of the incoming crude oil, the values of the various possible refined products, the contractual commitments to dehver certain products, the performance measures of the various units within a refinery, and the hke, it is possible to determine the mix of produc ts that optimizes the economic return from processing this crude. The solution of this problem involves many relationships and constraints and is solved with techniques such as linear programming. [Pg.771]

Most refinery process units and equipment are manifolded into a collection unit, called the blowdown system. Blowdown systems provide for the safe handling and disposal of liquids and gases that are either automatically vented from the process units through pressure relief valves, or that are manually drawn from units. Recirculated process streams and cooling water streams are often manually purged to prevent the continued buildup of contaminants in the stream. Part or all of the contents of equipment can also be purged to the blowdown system prior to shutdown before normal or emergency shutdowns. [Pg.100]

PA-6,6 is made from the relatively expensive materials hexamethylene diamine and adipic acid. An alternative synthesis of PA-6,6 from adiponitrile and hexamethylene diamine utilizing water is under investigation.16 PA-6 can be synthesized in a continuous process at atmospheric pressure, but reaction times are very long as the ring-opening initiation step is particularly slow. Batch-type production processes, particularly those with small batch sizes, have less energy efficiency as compared to continuous processes. A typical example of a batch operation on a relatively small scale is the production of titanium in 1-ton batches of the metal. The energy efficiency of the process is much less than that of continuous methods such as iron being produced in a blast furnace, or even of large-scale batch methods such as basic oxygen steel-making. The heat losses per unit of production are much less in continuous and large-batch processes, and this also enables the waste heat from process streams to be used. [Pg.750]
