Ultimate oxygen demand

The theoretical chemical (or ultimate) oxygen demand, or ThCOD (BODU), can be calculated for a wastewater with relatively few oxidizable components. The procedure requires one to calculate the equivalent oxygen concentration necessary for the complete stoichiometric oxidation of each of the wastewater components to its corresponding highest oxidation state and sum them for the total wastewater ThCOD. Carbonaceous components of wastewater generally considered to be fully... [Pg.558]

A wastewater contains 250mg/L benzoic acid, C6H5COOH. What is the ultimate oxygen demand (BODU) of this water The molecular weight of benzoic acid is 122. [Pg.559]

As described in the previous problem, the ultimate oxygen demand is a calculated oxygen demand that assumes oxidation of all species to their most highly oxidized stable form CO2, H2O, etc. [Pg.559]

Conditions during start-up can have a dramatic impact on time required to reach reasonable performance levels and on the ultimate reactor performance. Dilution rate, loading rate as measured by chemical oxygen demand (COD), carrier choice, inoculum amount, inoculum strategy, and inoculum species distribution are critical parameters (Sreekrishnan et al., 1991 Araki and Harada, 1994 Austermann-Haun et al., 1994 Yongming et al., 1993). Pore characteristics have a strong influence on time required for start-up and on the ultimate biomass density in the... [Pg.632]

BOD5 = 0.68 BODl (ultimate biological oxygen demand) ... [Pg.210]

In this equation, if the incubation period is five days, the BOD is called the five-day biochemical oxygen demand, BOD5. It is understood that unless it is specified, BOD5 is a BOD measured at the standard temperature of incubation of 20°C. If incubation is done for a long period of time such as 20 to 30 days, it is assumed that all the BOD has been exerted. The BOD under this situation is the ultimate therefore, it is called ultimate BOD, or BOD . [Pg.150]

Control of pH is important in the wastewater stream, but it ultimately becomes a byproduct of controlling FOG and BOD. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) is a useful parameter, and it can usually be predictably estimated at 1.4 to 1.6 times BOD for the model plant discussed in this section. These ratio values can vary based on processes in-place and other unusual circumstances. Measurement of COD is more often a tool to determine whether BOD tests are being correctly conducted and are useful in that results can be obtained in a matter of hours rather than days. [Pg.2389]

BOD is most commonly expressed as five-day BOD (BOD5) and ultimate BOD (BODU). BOD5 is the oxygen demand that is exerted after a standard period of 5 days of incubation and is the value required by regulatory agencies. [Pg.557]
