Ulcers licorice root

Plant materials often contain triterpenoid saponin in considerable amounts. With regard to plants with antiulcer activity, licorice root contains about 2 to 12% of glycyrrhizic acid and the seeds of the horse chestnut up to 13% of aescin. Several plants containing high amounts have been shown to possess antiulcer activity in several experimental ulcer models (Table 64.2). [Pg.595]

Carbenoxolone derives from the hydrolysis of glycyrrhizinic acid after its extraction from licorice root. Carbenoxolone was the first drug found to accelerate peptic ulcer healing by a mechanism not involving the inhibition of acid secretion. Several mechanisms of action have been proposed as follows to explain the pharmacological activity of carbenoxolone ... [Pg.597]

Glycyrrhizin is a glycoside with a uronic acid disaccharide, 2-0-P-D-glucopy-ranosyl uronic acid-a-D-glucopyranosyl uronic acid, attached to a polyterpenoid aglycone (see Fig. 5.6D). It is found in licorice root and is 50 times sweeter than sucrose, with a licorice taste [22]. Glycyrrhizin has medical and dental applications it has been used to treat ulcers it also has been used as an antiinflammatory... [Pg.147]

Licorice, the root and rhizome of different varieties of Glycyrrhiza glabra (Leguminosae), has been extensively used in medicine for its antiulcer activity. The principal constituent of licorice is glycyr-rhizinic acid, a triterpenoid saponin. This chemical class is known to offer protection against ulcers. [Pg.597]

Powder licorice and comfrey root as fine as possible, and mix together in equal parts. Take 2 tablespoons (30 ml) twice a day (morning and evening), mixed in any liquid of choice (e.g., apple juice), for 30 days. For the next 60 days, use 1 tablespoon (15 ml) licorice (or marshmallow) root mornings only. The herbs should not be in capsules in order to allow them to fully coat the stomach lining. (For duodenal ulcers, take in capsules.)... [Pg.112]
