Successfiil tests gave grounds to the American specialists to start development of the experimental space system NEFSTF with the Topaz-2 NFS and electrical jet-propulsion engines of different types to transfer a space vehicle from a radiation-safe orbit to the geostationary one (H = 36,000 km) (O Fig. 59.9), and to start development of the SFACE-R thermionic NFS of 40 kW electrical power using the Topaz-2 technology. 

Jet Propulsion. Although rockets certainly produce jets of gas, the term jet engine typically denotes an engine in which the working fluid is mostly atmospheric air, so that the only propellant carried on the vehicle is the fuel used to release heat. Typically, the mass of fuel used is only about 2 to 4 percent of the mass of air that is accelerated by the vehicle. Types of jet engines include the ramjet, the turbojet, the turbofan, and the turboshaft.
