Jet Propulsion. Although rockets certainly produce jets of gas, the term jet engine typically denotes an engine in which the working fluid is mostly atmospheric air, so that the only propellant carried on the vehicle is the fuel used to release heat. Typically, the mass of fuel used is only about 2 to 4 percent of the mass of air that is accelerated by the vehicle.
