Pulkkinen, L., Uitto, J. (1998). Hemidesmosomal variants of epidermolysis hullosa. Mutations in the alpha6heta4 integrin and the 180-kD hullous pemphigoid antigen/type XVII collagen genes. Exp. Dermatol. 7 46-64. [Pg.628]

Plakin proteins link intracellular keratin intermediate filaments to hemidesmosomes of basal epidermal cells, or to desmosomes on suprabasal epidermal cells (Sect. 5.2.1), whereas type XVII collagen (the only collagen secreted by epithelial cells ) and integrins attach hemidesmosomes to a basal lamina. Three p 1 integrins (with al, a3 or a5 partners)... [Pg.69]

Type XVII collagen is composed of three identical procollagen polypeptides, each about 1,500 amino acids in length. It has a tadpole-like shape under physiological conditions (deduced from rotary shadowing electron microscopy of bovine cell lines or the pure protein). The protein is one of very few proteins whose N- and C-termini are inverted with respect to the membrane. In nearly all transmembrane proteins, for example integrins, the C-terminus is cytosolic and the N-terminus is extracellular. In type XVII collagen, the cytosolic N-terminal domain comprises about a third of the amino acid residues... [Pg.70]

Most types of collagen are extracellular matrix proteins but four of the vertebrate collagens (XIII, XVII, XXIII, and XXV) are classified as type II membrane proteins. They contain an N-terminal cytoplasmic domain, a transmembrane domain, and an extracellular collagenous domain. Also, a membrane-bound protein, ectodys-plasin-A, is a membrane protein with 19 -Gly-Xaa-Yaa- repeat. Macrophage scavenger receptor, ... [Pg.491]

COLl domain of type XXIII collagen contains multiple copies of a conserved KGD motif used for integrin-mediated cell adhesion by collagen type XVII. ... [Pg.492]
