Room temperature nematic liquid crystals have been developed for electro-optical applications [13-15]. In particular, twisted nematic (TN) liquid crystal displays have been widely used for practical display devices [ 13-15,38). In the TN cells, nematic liquid crystals form twisted alignment due to the influence of rubbed aligmnent polymer layers coated on the substrates (Fig. 7a). The TN cells are placed between two crossed polarizers. Without electric fields, the twisted LC aligmnent induces optical rotation of incident polarized... [Pg.224]

LC film series demonstrates a variety of optical functions by orienting the molecules in the liquid crystalline polymer layer. Three structures of liquid crystalline polymer layers are shown in Fig. 4.18. Stretching techniques cannot be used to change the orientation of the molecules in the vertical direction of the film, i.e., in the hybrid alignment and twisted alignment, which is the source of the advanced features of the LC film series. ... [Pg.111]

For example, with the aim of inexpensive simple display, a twisted nematic liquid crystal device [6] is resistant for variation of substrate spacing. Formation of twisted-alignment polymer walls is useful to hold two substrates and can have good contrast ratio. This is because the light leakage from the walls is suppressed to be small. [Pg.217]

If LCP is used to make a retardation film, then one is not restricted to retardation films with a uniform optical axis. It is possible in fact to have twisted alignment, bend alignment, hybrid alignment, etc., in the same manner as ordinary LCs. After... [Pg.115]
