Physical destruction of beaches by construction of trenches, placement of mines and other defense installations not only damaged the intertidal zone, but also posed a severe threat to turtles nesting on the islands [41]. However, a survey of the coral reef islands of Kubbar, Qarre, and Timm Al-Maradem off the Kuwaiti coast by [94] did not show any significant damage to coral reefs due to oil spills in these areas. 

The survival of all the miners underground at the time of the Shde allowed McConneh Brock (1904, pp. 11-12) to reject the possibhity of a fire damp explosion. Fire damp is an explosive mixture of methane (from coal) and air. This concern, however, foreshadowed Canada s worst mining disaster, at the TBhcrest Mine, south of Turtle Mountain, where in June 1914, a fire damp explosion killed 189 miners. Sparks from a fall of rock had ignited methane gas. From this fire had sprung the enormous coal dust explosion (Anderson 1980, p. 41) and produced an extreme example of indirect landshde damage.
