In loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta), PCB concentrations in the chorioallantoic membrane correlate closely with whole-egg PCB concentrations (Cobb and Wood 1997). The authors recommend the use of chorioallantoic membrane tissues as a nonlethal methodology for predicting PCB concentrations in sea turtle hatchlings. [Pg.1284]

Turtles also use chemical cues for food, as shown for the marine loggerhead turtle, Caretta caretta (Grassman etal., 1984). Among freshwater turtles, the European pond turtle, Emys orbicularis, locates food hy chemoreception. This species moves chemical stimuli from the pond water to the chemoreceptors of the nasal and oral cavities by slow jaw testing movements . The frequency of these movements increases in response to the amino acids alanine, arginine. [Pg.348]

Tortoiseshell is the name given to the mottled, golden or reddish and brown, translucent, homy plates or scutes covering the shells of certain species of marine turtle. The best known and by far the finest tortoiseshell comes from the hawksbill turtle, but the scutes of the green and the loggerhead turtles have also been put to some decorative uses. [Pg.125]

The scutes on the carapace of the loggerhead are not nearly as pretty as those of the other turtles, and are as thin and fragile as those of the green turtle. Nonetheless the material has been used as tortoiseshell, thou mainly as veneer. The shells are also sold whole. [Pg.129]

The following applies mostly to tortoiseshell om the hawksbill turtle, as that from the green and loggerhead is thin and more britde, and takes less easily to the various treatments. [Pg.131]

The Bluebottle is eaten by other animals, including the loggerhead turtle. The small Bluebottle Fish lives among the tentacles of the Bluebottle and feeds on the tentacles, which are constantly regenerated. Clown Anemone Fish and Yellow-Jack Fish reportedly have a similar relationship and all are nearly immune to the poison from the stinging cells. [Pg.45]

New evidence indicates that chemical imprinting in sea turtles will have to be even more phenomenal than previously imagined if it indeed occurs. Studies on predicted age of sexual maturity suggest 15-35 or more years for earliest maturation in green and loggerhead sea turtles (Balazs, 1980 ... [Pg.346]
