The study published by Springer [3] concluded that, for the nine different environmental impact categories that were assessed, in all categories material recycling (e.g., in artificial turf products)... 

An example of an artificial turf product is one marketed by Mondo as Mondoturf. This is made up of layers comprising a sheet of PE that is placed directly on the soil, a prefabricated elastic mat, the turf surface and an Ecofill infill. About 70% of this system is recycled material, with the elastic mat being derived from waste tyres and the plastic membranes from waste bottles [76].

Horticultural appHcations include use of greenhouse thermal screens, rowcrop and turf covers, conveyer belts to process agricultural products, and other similar items. High performance fibers are not normally used in these appHcations, but high strength fibers are preferable for conveyer belts. Environmentally inert low cost fibers such as polypropylene are used for many of the outdoor horticultural appHcations. 

For the preparation of mixtures of mercurous and mercuric chlorides used to control turf-fungus diseases, the precipitated product of the second method may be mixed with the required amount of mercuric chloride. Alternatively, the chamber material, if the ratios of mercurous and mercuric chloride are correct, may be used directiy.

In terms of surface area covered, artificial turf is the dominant commercial product in the category of artificial surfaces described in this article. Light-duty surfaces are the largest representative, followed by tennis court and multipurpose recreational surfaces. 

Jai Tire has patented a process that, upon a dding cmmb mbber to sod, improves turf by providing aeration and reducing compaction (49). Superior Environmental Products, Inc. has developed a material that contains 40% of scrap tire mbber. The material can control chemical, od, and gasoline spills... 

In turf apphcations, SCU, with or without wax sealant, provides improved safety and longevity over urea. This is shown ia Figure 5 which rates the quahty of Kentucky bluegrass with time after being treated with 2 lb N/1000 sq ft (9.76 g/m ) of urea and two types of SCU. In this particular test, a quahty rating of 3 or less is acceptable. Urea provided acceptable turf quahty for 11 weeks, whereas the two SCU products (37% nitrogen) gave quahty turf for 16 weeks. 

Urea and ammonium sulfate [7783-20-2] are coated by Chisso Co. under the trade names LP Cote and Meister. AH U.S. consumption of these products is sourced from Japan. Chisso-Asahi products are marketed through very specific distribution channels (Table 5). Coated N—P—K products are marketed primarily to commercial nurseries and greenhouses. Coated urea products are marketed in blends to commercial nurseries, as weU as to professional turf and strawberry growers. 

POLYON-coated products are marketed for turf and commercial nursery appHcations and specialty, medium to high cost, agricultural crop appHcations. 

PSCFs serve a number of markets including turf and garden, specialty agriculture, and commercial ornamental production. 

Curalan DF is a fungicide produced by BASF Corp. for the purpose of treating such diseases as brown patch and fusarium patch on turf. Curalan DF was applied to turf in California, Florida, and Pennsylvania at a rate of 5.6 lb of active ingredient in 80 gallons of finished spray solution per acre using a tractor-mounted boom sprayer. Four applications were made 14 days apart. These conditions were selected to reflect the maximum level of dislodgeable residue when the product is typically used in agricultural practice. 

The construction and mining industries offer additional applications for temporary structures, such as concrete forms and geo-textiles, as well as a wide variety of products for restoration of land including sand bags, turf covers and temporary protection for trees and plants. 

The range of economic products necessary for managing the contemporary lawn is mind-boggling. The economy includes, but is by no means restricted to, power and nonpower tool makers, seed growers, turf farms, raw chemical producers and chemical formulators, the retail outlets that supply many of these goods, the global workshops that produce them, and the offices that imagine, execute, and advertise their diverse forms.
