Catalysts used for hydrodesulfurization (HDS) and hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) of heavy oil fractions are largely based on alumina-supported molybdenum or tungsten to which cobalt or nickel is added as a promoter [11]. As the catalysts are active in the sulfided state, activation is carried out by treating the oxidic catalyst precursor in a mixture of H2S and H2 (or by exposing the catalyst to the sulfur-containing feed). Tantalum is a gray, heavy, and very hard metal. When pure, it is ductile and can be drawn into fine wire, which is used as a filament for evaporating metals such as aluminum. Tantalum is almost completely immune to chemical attack at temperatures below ISOoC, and is attacked only by hydrofluoric acid, acidic solutions containing the fluoride ion, and free sulfur trioxide. Alkalis attack it only slowly. At high temperatures, tantalum becomes much more reactive. The element has a melting point exceeded only by tungsten and rhenium. Materials and Process. The steel chosen for tire cord is a eutectoid carbon steel containing 0.7% carbon, 0.5% manganese, 0.2% siUcon, and a very low amount of sulfur and phosphoms (9,48). The steel rod is cleaned with acid, rinsed, drawn through tungsten carbide dies to reduce its diameter from 5.5 to - 3.0 mm, heat treated (patented) to increase ductihty for further drawing to - 1 mm, then patented again. [Pg.85]

The composition of this alloy (54% nickel, 15% molybdenum, 15% chromium, 5% tungsten and 5% iron) is less susceptible to intergranular corrosion at welds. The presence of chromium in this alloy gives it better resistance to oxidizing conditions than the nickel/molybdenum alloy, particularly for durability in wet chlorine and concentrated hypochlorite solutions, and has many applications in chlorination processes. Marcantoncetos et al. [112] have described a phosphorimetric method for the determination of traces of boron in seawater. This method is based on the observation that in the glass formed by ethyl ether containing 8% of sulfuric acid at 77 K, boric acid gives luminescent complexes with dibenzoylmethane. A 0.5 ml sample is diluted with 10 ml 96% sulfuric acid, and to 0.05-0.3 ml of this solution 0.1ml 0.04 M dibenzoylmethane in 96% sulfuric acid is added. The solution is diluted to 0.4 ml with 96% sulfuric acid, heated at 70 °C for 1 h, cooled, ethyl ether added in small portions to give a total volume of 5 ml, and the emission measured at 77 K at 508 nm, with excitation at 402 nm. At the level of 22 ng boron per ml, hundredfold excesses of 33 ionic species give errors of less than 10%. However, tungsten and molybdenum both interfere. [Pg.145]

The formation of rings that contain a thioether linkage does not appear to be catalyzed efficiently by Ru, even when terminal olefins are present. On the other hand, molybdenum appears to work relatively well, as shown in Eqs. 30 [207] and 31 [208]. Under some conditions polymerization (ADMET) to give poly-thioethers is a possible alternative [26]. Aryloxide tungsten catalysts have also been employed successfully to prepare thioether derivatives [107,166,169]. Apparently the mismatch between a hard earlier metal center and a soft sulfur donor is what allows thioethers to be tolerated by molybdenum and tungsten. Similar arguments could be used to explain why cyclometalated aryloxycarbene complexes of tungsten have been successfully employed to prepare a variety of cyclic olefins such as the phosphine shown in Eq. 32 [107,193]. [Pg.34]
