CH3) Tela, is a crimson, crystalline powder, sintering sharply at 134° C. to a black core, which intumesces at 175° to 176° C. It separates from alcohol or ethyl acetate as reddish-purple crystals, sintering and in-tumescing at appreciably lower temperatures, these changes occurring at 131° to 134° C. and 169° to 171° C. respectively.

Dervent and Karacan (125) examined the effects of intramuscular injections of atropine sulfate (15-60 Mg/kg), scopolamine hydrobromide (1.5-6 >ig/kg), and metbylscopolammonlum brcmlde (1.5-6 >ig/kg) on rapld-eye-movement (BEM) sleep and Its neurogenic correlate, nocturnal penile tumescence (NFT) The drugs were injected 2 h after onset of sleep. Fifteen healthy male volunteers between the agea of 21 and 35 were used. Scopolamine at 6 jig/kg and atropine at 60 jiig/kg suppressed both BEM sleep and NFT. Quatemlzed scopolamine had neither of these effects.

In New York City, five of 50 000 deaths over a 5-year period were associated with tumescent liposuction all had received hdocaine in doses of 10-40 mg/kg in association with general anesthesia and/or intravenous sedation and analgesia (49). Three patients died as a result of severe acute intraoperative hypotension and bradycardia with no identified cause, one died of fluid overload, and another died of pulmonary embolism. The authors speculated that hdocaine toxicity or lidocaine-related drug interactions could have contributed to some of the deaths, but other causes could not be ruled out.

Vacuum tumescence constriction therapy is the use of an external device that creates a vacuum to cause penile erection, which is then maintained by a constriction band. It produces rigidity sufficient for intercourse in 91% of men, with satisfaction in 80%.

Orthophenylphenol (Tumescal OP), in the form of its sodium salt, is soluble in water, and therefore more easily removed after dyeing. It is also free from the somewhat unpleasant odour of diphenyl. The commercial product is the sodium salt which is dissolved in water and added to the dyebath. Unlike diphenyl the effectiveness is, to some extent, governed by liquor ratio and sufficient must be used to give a concentration of 3 to 4 lb per 100 gallons. The sodium salt does not act as a carrier and the orthophenylphenol must be liberated by the gradual addition of acetic acid.
