Properties. The physical strengths of modified isocyanurate foams are proportional to foam densities. The values are about the same as those of urethane foams, as discussed in the previous chapter. Typical jn-operties of modified isocyanurate foams to be discussed are flame endurance and firiabUity. Figure 32 shows the relationship between OH/NCO equivalent ratio (inverse equivalent ratio of NCO/OH) and fiiabUity in terms of the ASTM C-421 tumbling test (16). 

The foam had a density of 0.0317 g/cin , closed-cell content of 96.9% compression resistance 1.8 kg/cm and brittleness (ASTM C-421) 27.4% weight loss after a 10-min tumbling test. 

Pellet tumbling tests can determine attrition loss, related to abrasion resistance.

Tumble testing is another type of impact testing, which involves a number of different parameters. In a typical tumble test, one takes a number of test specimens and places them in a closed container. Quite often, other items will also be placed in the container, such as rocks, small pebbles, and abrasive media. The container is then placed in a test machine which will tumble the container, in a more or less random manner, for a period of time. A disadvantage of tumble testing is that it can be difficult—and sometimes impossible— to obtain quantitative data on specific individual parts. However, tumble testing is rarely used for this type of analysis. 

The beauty of tumble testing is that it is an all-encompassing test. It is a rock-and-roll, take-no-prisoners, sink-or-swim, do-or-die kind of test. It is the engineering equivalent of playing No-Limit Hold Em poker, looking at your cards, evaluating the bets on the table, and then declaring, I m all in (Tables 5.1-5.2).
