Trout priming

The mode of action has not yet been elucidated but the manufacturer states that it probably behaves like the herbicide triflurolin and its congeners. These materials inhibit cell division by binding to tubuHn thereby internipting micro-tubule development. This, in turn, stops spindle fiber formation essential to mitosis and cell division. Experiments with C-labeled Prime+ show that it is acutely toxic to fish with estimated LC q (96 h) of less than 100 ppb for rainbow trout and bluegiU. sunfish. However, channel catfish did not exhibit any toxic response at the maximum attainable water concentration (10). [Pg.425]

In vitro studies in our laboratory involving 1-h incubations of 0.5-g liver slices of rainbow trout with 10 ml of 1-, 2.5, and 5-mg/100 ml concentrations of MS-222, resulted in 8.5, 6.9, and k.2% (respectively) of the drug being acetylated. Similar incubations of kidney tissue resulted in 0, 0, and 3.2% acetylation. These incubation studies indicate that the liver is the prime site of acetylation of MS-222, but suggest that some may occur in the kidney as well. However, in vitro evaluation of the acetylating capability of rainbow trout kidney is complicated by the diffuse structure and heavy pigmentation of the organ. [Pg.126]

Scott, A. P., Liley, N. R., and Vermeirssen, E. L. M. (1994). Urine of reproductively female rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbuam), contains a priming pheromone which enhances plasma levels of sex steroids and gonadotropin II in malts. Journal of Fish Biology 44,131-148. [Pg.510]

But as we rolled among the daisies and bobbles of fallen fruit, my education, which had included the dissection of plants, fish, and mammals, reasserted itself a little. My father and I, in our desire to get to the essence of things, had studied the sac of tiny eggs in the body of a female trout and made detailed observations as to why a flower needs the bee to reproduce itself It dawned on me that my body had changed its behavior in such a radical and clamorous way during the past few minutes because it was priming itself not just for love, but for reproduction. [Pg.37]

Effects of copper sulfate on reproductive behavior and physiology were studied in mature brown trout (Salmo trutta) parr (Jaensson and Olsen 2010). The study clearly demonstrated that exposure to copper can disturb the reproductive behavior and endocrinology of the males. Male brown trouts that were exposed for 4 days to copper were then used in a priming experiment with 5-h exposure to the sex pheromone PGF2a. In groups exposed to 10 or 100 pg/L copper the amount of expressible milt was significantly lower, less than half, than in control parr exposed only to water. During the behavioral experiment in the big stream tank (Fig. 26.5),... [Pg.513]
