Tris hydrated complexes

Anhydrous ruthenium(lll) chloride, RuCL, is made by direct chlorination of the metal at 700°C. Two aliotropic forms result. The trihydrate is made by evaporating an HQ solution of rulheinuiu(III) hydroxide to dryness or reducing ruthenium(VIII) oxide in a HQ solution. The tnhydrate, RuCk 3R>0, is the usual commercial form. Aqueous solutions of the tri-hydrate are a straw color in dilute solution and red-brown in concentrated solution. Ruthenium(lll) chloride in solution apparently forms a variety of aquo- and hydroxy complexes. The analogous bromide. RuBr3, is made by the same solution techniques as the chloride, using HBr instead of HQ. [Pg.1453]

Further use of relaxation data, now studying the water and the ligand protons34 36, leads to an estimate of the outer sphere hydration of the lanthanides. We know there are no water molecules in the first coordination sphere of course. These outer sphere relaxation data for the different cations are proportional to susceptibilities and electron relaxation times and become very useful in the study of the inner sphere hydration of other complexes M(dipic) (H20)x and M(dipic)2(H20)y, see below. Note that there is no evidence of further association of the Ln(III) tris-dipicolinate complexes with small cations such as sodium ions. There are old reports of tris sulfate complexes " and a number of chromium(lll) sulfate hydrates are known. In recent years monosulfatopentaaquachromium(III) complexes have been prepared and characterized by IR spectroscopy sulfate probably behaves as a monodentate ligand. The basic chromium(III) sulfate Cr(0H)S04 H20 crystallizes in the non-centrosymmetric, monoclinic, space group O. Each chromium atom is coordinated octahedrally by two hydroxo groups, three sulfate O atoms and a water molecule.
