Over 50 acidic, basic, and neutral aluminum sulfate hydrates have been reported. Only a few of these are well characterized because the exact compositions depend on conditions of precipitation from solution. Variables such as supersaturation, nucleation and crystal growth rates, occlusion, nonequilihrium conditions, and hydrolysis can each play a role ia the final composition. Commercial dry alum is likely not a single crystalline hydrate, but rather it contains significant amounts of amorphous material. [Pg.174]

Hydrates. Aluminum sulfate hydrates, Al2(SO H20, where n ranges from 0 to 27 have been reported (3—6). Relative decreasiag vapor pressure studies iadicate the presence of an octadecahydrate, hexadecahydrate, dodecahydrate, dihydrate, and the anhydrous salt, assumiag that basic aluminum sulfates are not formed duriag the dehydration (3). [Pg.174]

Solubility. The aqueous solubiUty of a typical commercial aluminum sulfate, Al2(SO H20, where n = 14-18, is shown compared to the solubihty of the octadecahydrate in Table 1 (2,8). Differences in solubiUties probably result from small amounts of impurities such as iron, and the slight excess of AI2O2 base present in technical grade commercial aluminum sulfate hydrate. [Pg.174]

Water and Waste Water Treatment. PAG products are used in water treatment for removal of suspended soHds (turbidity) and other contaminants such as natural organic matter from surface waters. Microorganisms and colloidal particles of silt and clay are stabilized by surface electrostatic charges preventing the particles from coalescing. Historically, alum (aluminum sulfate hydrate) was used to neutralize these charges by surface adsorption of Al cations formed upon hydrolysis of the alum. Since 1983 PAG has been sold as an alum replacement in the treatment of natural water for U.S. municipal and industrial use. [Pg.180]

Low sulfate selectivity of the ion-selective electrodes (ISE) based on lipophilic quaternary ammonium salts (QAS) is usually explained by unfavorable ratio of sulfate hydration and solvation energies. We have been shown that another reason does exist as well namely, low efficiency of sulfate-QAS cation interaction caused by steric hindrance for simultaneous approach of two QAS cations, containing four long-chain hydrocarbon substituents, to sulfate ion. [Pg.220]

Calcium sulfate crystals were precipitated in a Continuous Mixed Suspension Mixed Product Removal (CMSMPR) crystallizer by mixing of calcium phosphate and sulfuric acid feed streams. The formed calcium sulfate hydrate (anhydrite, hemihydrate and dihydrate) mainly depends on the temperature and the solution composition. The uptake of cadmium and phosphate ions in these hydrates has been studied as a function of residence time and solution composition. In anhydrite, also the incorporation of other metal ions has been investigated. The uptake was found to be a function of both thermodynamics and kinetics. [Pg.381]

Zinc oxide reacts with mineral acids to yield corresponding zinc salts when the solution is evaporated. Thus, with sulfuric acid it forms zinc sulfate (hydrated) ... [Pg.991]

When many hydrates are heated the water of crystallisation is driven away. For example, if crystals of copper(n) sulfate hydrate (blue) are heated strongly, they lose their water of crystallisation. Anhydrous copper(n) sulfate remains as a white powder ... [Pg.139]
