The propellant which has exclusively been used for a long time in conventional military weapons is the smokeless (or, more accurately, low-smoke) powder. According to its composition, it can be classified as single-base powders (e.g., nitrocellulose powder), doublebase powders (e.g., nitroglycerine powder) and triple-base powders (e.g., nitrocellulose + nitroglycerine (or diglycol dinitrate) + nitroguanidine powders). [Pg.213]

The tests actually employed vary with the kind of explosive tested (explosives, single-base, double-base or triple-base powders, or solid propellants) and the temporal and thermal exposure to be expected (railway transportation or many years storage under varying climatic conditions). In the case of propellants about to be transported by train, only short-time testing is required. However, to obtain an estimate of the expected service life is required, the so-called long-time tests must... [Pg.235]

Triple base powder Propellant in which the main ingredients are guncotton, nitroglycerin, and nitroguani-dine. Used in high caliber weapons. [Pg.629]

Single base" smokeless powder, developed mainly in the United States, uses only nitrocellulose. "Double base" smokeless powder, developed in Europe, is a blend of nitrocellulose and nitroglycerine. "Cordite," a British development, consists of 65% NC, 30% NG, and 5% mineral jelly. The mineral jelly (a hydrocarbon material) functions as a coolant and produces substantial amounts of CO 2, CO, and H 2O gas to improve the propellant characteristics. "Triple base" smokeless powder, containing nitroguanidine as a third component with nitroglycerine and nitrocellulose is also manufactured. [Pg.80]

Smokeless powder A low explosive used in ammunition as a propellant, which can be single, double, or triple based. [Pg.197]

Triple base A smokeless powder that contains nitrocellulose, nitroglycerin, and nitroguanidine. [Pg.197]

DOUBLE-BASE AND TRIPLE-BASE PROPELLANTS. A description of double-base proplnts containing NC + NG was given in this Encycl under BALLI5TITE (Vol 2, pp B8-L to B10-L), under CANNON PROPELLANT Vol 2, pp C33-L to C37-L) and under CORDITE (VoL 3, PP C531-L to C541-R). Some Ball Powders, described in Vol 2, pp Bll-R to B16-L can be made double-base. The description did not include the German proplnts which were described previously in Refs 1, 2 3 and in Ref 4, pp Get 142 (Table 43) Ger 146 (Table 46), under PROPELLANT (Treibmittei)... [Pg.430]

In the manuf of Ger or Amer triple base proplnts, powdered NGu is gradually added to the blend of NC-DEGDN (or NC-NG), contained in a mixing machine, and kneaded until the mass becomes fairly homogeneous. [Pg.184]

Smokeless powder, as the name suggests, is a replacement propellant that does not produce the volumes of smoke associated with the combustion of black powder. Smokeless powders are classified into single, double, or triple based, according to the energetic materials included during production. The single-based propellants use only... [Pg.413]

Diphenylamine is the most common stabilizer especially in single-based powders. It has been suggested that diphenylamine is not a good stabilizer for double-based propellants as it may hydrolyze NG.59 2-Nitrodi-phenylamine is used for double- and triple-based propellants. [Pg.62]

If the use of solvents is required in the production process of double and triple base propellants, the nitroglycerine can be introduced in the mixtures in the form of a master mix , a gelatinized mixture consisting of 85% nitroglycerine and 15% alcohol-wet nitrocellulose of the same type as the prescribed powder component. [Pg.214]

The experiment with the MKIII ballistic mortar were run on smokeless powder because the powder is a problem to transport, there are three kinds of smokeless gun powder single base gun powder, double base gun powder and triple base gun powder. [Pg.204]

Gun powder is also molded into several shapes. The scatter in the results from the examination of gun powder is shown in Fig. 3.98. The scatter results from the difficulty in making the test samples the same shape. Initial experiments gave an order of sensitivity of triple base < single base < double base. However, when the grains of powder were broken into smaller fragments and retested, the overall sensitivity increased and the order was single base < triple < double base. The sensitivity of gun powder depends not only on its composition by on the shape of the grains. [Pg.204]
