In the spring of 1945, preparations began in the Pacific for the use of the atomic bomb. On May 8, 1945, Germany surrendered, and the project was then focused solely on Japan. On July 16, 1945, a test device code-named Gadget was detonated at the Alamogordo Bombing Range in New Mexico as part of Project Trinity, the first explosion of a nuclear weapon. The success of the first test of a nuclear weapon was a testament to the ability of the leadership of the Manhattan Project to carry out an unprecedented industrial project, with the world s most talented scientists... 

Uses of Plutonium. The fissile isotope Pu had its first use in fission weapons, beginning with the Trinity test at Alamogordo, New Mexico, on July 16, 1945, followed soon thereafter by the "Litde Boy" bomb dropped on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. Its weapons use was extended as triggers for thermonuclear weapons. This isotope is produced in and consumed as fuel in breeder reactors. The short-Hved isotope Tu has been used in radioisotope electrical generators in unmanned space sateUites, lunar and interplanetary spaceships, heart pacemakers, and (as Tu—Be alloy) neutron sources (23).

After returning to Cambridge in 1667, Newton was elected Fellow of Trinity College. Two years later he succeeded Barrow as Lucasian Professor. In 1696 Newton moved to London. He served first as Warden and from 1699 to his death in 1727 as Master of the Royal Mint. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London m 1671, and the President of this society in 1703, a position he retained for the rest of his life. He also semed two undistinguished terms as a Member of Parliament for the University of Cambridge (1689-1690 and 1701—1702). He was knighted in Cambridge in 1705. 

The British physicist, famous for his discovei y of the electron, was born in Cheetham, near Manchester, on December 18, 1856. He first entered Owens College (later Manchester University) at the early age of fourteen. In 1876 Thomson won a scholarship in Mathematics to Trinity College, Cambridge, and remained a member of the College for the rest of his life. He became a Fellow in 1880, Lecturer in 1883 and Master in 1918, a position he held with great flair until his death on August 30, 1940.

A second sun, powerful and man-made, was born on July 16, 1945. A ball of fire thousands of times hotter than the surface of the real sun illuminated the New Mexico desert. Its birthplace was the Trinity site, and the explosion was the culmination of years of work by the world s brightest scientists. It was the planet s first atomic bomb, the tangible and frightening outcome of splitting the nucleus of an atom.
