Benzo[ghi]perylene (1,12-benzoperylene) [191-24-2] M 276,3, m 273°, 277-278.5°, 278-280°, Purified as light green crystals by recrystn from CfiH6 or xylene and sublimes at 320-340° and 0.05mm [UV Helv Chim Acta 42 2315 7959 Chem Ber 65 846 1932 Fluoresc. Spectrum J Chem Soc 3875 7954]. 1,3,5-Trinitrobenzene complex m 310-313° (deep red crystals from C6Hg) picrate m 267-270° (dark red crystals from CgH6) styphnate (2,4,6-trinitroresorcinol complex) m 234° (wine red crystals from CgH6). It recrystallises from propan-l-ol [J Chem Soc 466 7959].

Purified by passage through an AI2O3 column (Woelm, basic, activity I) and eluted with CgHg and recrystd from 2 volumes of EtOH- CeHe (4 1). Forms colourless or light yellow prisms or needles. Crystal structure data are available for an indole—trinitrobenzene complex (2) and for the lithium and sodium salts in the presence of polyamine ligands (3). The crystal structure of indole itself is evidently disordered (4). Table 1 gives the and C-nmr assignments in CDC13 (5). 13C-nmr assignments have been tabulated for many other indole derivatives (6).

Methylnaphthalene [91-57-6] M 142.2, m 34.7-34.9 , b 129-130 /25mm. Fractionally crystallise repeatedly from its melt, then fractionally distil under reduced pressure. It has been crystallised from benzene and dried under vacuum in an Abderhalden pistol. It can be purified via its picrate (m 114-115°) or better via the 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene complex as for 1-methylnaphthalene (above). [Beilstein 5IV 1693.]... 

Studies in solution suggest specific association of chloroform with the benzo [b] thiophene molecule and interaction of acetone with the sulfur atom.67 Complexation constants of benzo [b]thiophene with polar solvents (e.g., DMF, 2-pyrrolidone) have been determined by an NMR method.77 In the complex of benzo [b] thiophene with Ag+, the metal ion is strongly associated with the lone pair of electrons on the sulfur atom78 in the 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene complex, NMR data suggest that the trinitro compound lies over the phenyl ring of the heterocycle.78,79 Likewise, in the chromium tricarbonyl complex, the Cr(CO)3 group is bonded to the benzenoid ring.80 Studies of the structure of benzo[b]thiophenium salts will be discussed in Section III,A,2.
