The ability of triethanolamine to complex to aluminum has been shown to result in an increase in the effective Si/Al ratio in solution, and thus the formation of crystals of higher Si/Al ratio 115]. In the presence of butylamine, the magnesium hydroxyquinoline complex will form a new chloroform soluble complex, apparently of the composition CH3(CH2)3NH3[Mg(Ox)3], which gives the organic phase a yellow coloration. To further mask interfering cations triethanolamine is added to bind them in the water phase as ion pairs. The most important interfering ion masked by this procedure is aluminum. 

Aluminum speciation in zeolite synthesis mixtures containing triethanolamine and several other organic compounds has been investigated using Al NMR [28]. It was demonstrated that all aluminum in sodium aluminate solutions containing an excess of triethanolamine was present in complexed form, probably with tetrahedral symmetry.
