D created favorable conditions for the development of downy mildew and purple blotch. Herbicides of the si/m-triazine group that have a strong effect on com also stimulate the dangerous illness common smut (Ustilago maydis) [31].

Polymeric materials invented by CDT are conjugated homo- or copolymers. Examples are poly(arylenevinylene)s, [ArCRy CR2L] , polymers with triarylamine and triazine groups (Figure 11.17), and fused thiophenes as structural repeating units (Figure 11.18). 

Crop protection chemicals are an important group of contaminants that exhibit biologically mediated transformation in aerobic or anaerobic subsurface environments. We consider two well-known contaminants the insecticide parathion, which is an organophosphate compound, and the herbicide atrazine, from the triazine group.

The dye C.I. Solubilised Sulphur Red 11 [90218-69-2] (25) contains neither thiolate groups nor their precursors. It is prepared by treating perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride with l,4-diaminobenzene-2-sulfonic acid, then with cyanuric chloride and with NH3. It is not known whether the chlorine of the monochloro-triazine groups of the precursor is replaced by a mercapto group in dyeing.

The triazine herbicides can be divided into four different structural classes chlorotriazines, methylthiotriazines, methoxytriazines, and atypical or asymmetrical triazines. The chlorotriazine group includes atrazine, simazine, pro-pazine, terbuthylazine, and cyanazine. The methylthiotriazine group includes ametryn, prometryn, and terbutryn. The methoxytriazine group will include prometon and secbumeton. Hexazinone and metribuzin were chosen to represent the atypical triazine group. The plant metabolism of the most researched member of each triazine group will be discussed in detail to cover all major biological and chemical transformations reported in the literature.

The concentrations of the active herbicides of the triazine group giving 50% Hill reaction inhibition varied from 10 to 10" mole/dm. The compounds of the triazine group have been studied very thoroughly both with respect to warm-blooded animals and to humans. Maier-Bode s book (1971) and the toxicological bulletins of the Geigy Co. constitute a very good toxicological literature. 

The long-term usage of persistent organochlorine pesticides, such as DDT, HCH, herbicides of the s-triazine group resulted in soil contamination. More than 20% of the soils studied in the Ukraine contained DDT and its derivatives 4% of soils were polluted with HCH. The considerable quantities of DDT were found in breast milk, blood and fat tissues of humans. This is su )orted by the data obtained during the period of 1981-1985 [10] (see also chapters by Franekic, Gundy, and Vasilescu). 

The antibodies are replaced after each test. With this device it is possible to measure pesticides of the triazine group at a very low level (0.01 pg/l). 

An example of a reactive dyestuff is Procion Brilliant Orange GS (Reactive Orange 1), which is a derivative of J-acid. The triazine group does not act as chromogen in this case, but as an anchor to fix the dye to cotton (triazine anchor).
