Triage definition

Recent research has shown that the risk of stroke immediately after TIA or minor stroke is considerable (Giles and Rothwell 2007 Wu et al. 2007). However, this poses a challenge to clinical services because although the majority of patients will, by definition, have suffered a transient illness with no immediate major sequelae, an important minority are at risk of a major stroke in the short term. Prognostic tools have, therefore, been developed to identify patients at high (and low) risk in order to inform public education, aid effective triage to secondary care and direct secondary preventive treatment. [Pg.195]

The Medical Disaster Response (MDR) project was developed to specifically address an event where specially trained, local health care providers evaluate patients immediately after the event but cannot evacuate patients to definitive care (Benson, Koenig, Schultz, 1996). In this type of scenario, a dynamic triage methodology was developed that permits the triage process to evolve over hours or even days, thereby maximizing patient survival and resulting in a more efficient use... [Pg.169]

In addition to knowing the natural course of the disease or injury, the triage officer also should be aware of the current medical assets, the current casualty population, the anticipated number and types of incoming casualties, the current status of the evacuation process, and the assets and casualty population at the evacuation site. Committing assets to the stabilization of a seriously injured casualty in anticipation of early evacuation and more definitive care would be pointless if evacuation could not be accomplished within the time needed... [Pg.338]

Triage categories are based on the need for medical care, and they should not be confused with categories for evacuation to a higher-echelon medical treatment facility (MTF) for definitive care. The need for evacuation and, more importantly, the... [Pg.339]

This triage led to the selection of around 26 600 ligand-protein combinations from the 70 700 X-ray crystal structures available as of December 2010. This stage was the most time consuming, as automated selection could not be applied with complete confidence. Inevitably the amount of human input required also reduced the objectivity of the selection, so improvements in this part of the work are definitely possible. [Pg.170]

The clinical spectrum of CBS can be sub-classified into three distinct groups of affected patients. This nosologic scheme originally was created out of a need for enhanced clarity and uniformity in describing certain clinical scenarios that would frequently arise, which in turn could permit more efficient communication and triage between the clinical services responsible for the care of these patients. Based upon extensive review of the literature, these group definitions are equivalent to many previously described variations of carotid blowout [3,12,18,29],... [Pg.273]
