Transparent pigments

The flake zinc pigments give a considerably brighter, better metallic effect than zinc dust. Their appearance can be further improved by combining them with aluminum pigments or by applying a topcoat based on aluminum pigment. 

Another widespread application for flake zinc pigments is the coating of small articles with complex shapes (e.g., screws, steel springs, bolts, rivets) and for special anticorrosive paints (Section 5.2.11.1). 

Pigments become transparent in binders when the difference between the refractive index of the pigment (which depends on wavelength) and that of the binder is low, and when the particle size of the pigment is in the range 2-15 nm. The decisive factor for transparency is, however, the thickness of the pigment particles in the direction in which the light travels. 

In practice, pigment transparency is measured by determining the color difference between a sample of the pigmented system on a black background and the black background itself. The transparency measurement method and the definition of the transparency index are described in DIN 55988. 

In the so-called bonding-process , the metallic flakes are thermally and mechanically bonded to the surface of the resin powder, avoiding separation in the overspray and thereby giving problem-free reuse of the material. Furthermore there are optical advantages in bonded metallic powder coatings due to the very homogeneous distribution of the metallic flakes. 

there are many applications for metallic effect powder coatings, such as steel furniture, tools, transportation, household equipment, architectural coatings etc. 

Transparent inorganic pigments are conveniently divided into two groups colored and colorless. The colorless pigments, which do not absorb in the visible light range, are functional nano-materials with specific properties that are described in the sections below. The colored pigments may also possess these functional properties.

Both toners and tinted sealers provide uniform pigment distribution without penetration. The use of more transparent pigments can also provide acceptable clarity, but with limited depth and contrast.

Two crystal modifications are known, which differ considerably in terms of shade and fastness properties. Only the bluish red form continues to be commercially available. Its high specific surface area (about 75 m2/g) makes it a transparent pigment. 

They can be used as transparent pigments, but to develop hiding power they have to grow to a larger size. In the growth tank, the reaction is carried out at 75-90 °C, i. e.

Transparent Cobalt Blue. Cobalt blue [1345-16-0] C.I. Pigment Blue 28 77346, is also produced as a transparent pigment by precipitating cobalt and then aluminum as hydroxides or carbonates from salt solutions using alkali. The hydroxides or carbonates are then filtered, washed, dried, and calcined at 1000°C [5.278]. It is important to carry out the precipitation with high dilution and to distribute the alkali uniformly throughout the entire reaction volume. 

Cl pigment red 187, Cl No. 12486, is a transparent pigment with excellent heat fastness, moderate durability, and good solvent resistance. 

The particle sizes relevant for inorganic pigments stretch between several tens of nanometers for transparent pigment types to approximately two micrometers. For practical applications it is very desirable to determine not only the mean particle size but also the whole distribution. These parameters must not be confused with the crystal size determined by X-ray diffraction, as pigment particles usually are not monocrystals. 

The transparency of a pigmented system denotes its ability to scatter light as Uttle as possible. The color change of a transparent pigmented system when applied to a black substrate has to be very small the lower the color change, the higher is...
