693 trans-crotonic acid ester

Fig. 9.3. The pair of reactions illustrates the occurrence of stereoselectivity and the lack of stereospecificity in two cyclopropanations with an S ylide. The trans-crotonic acid methyl ester reacts with complete retention of the configuration, whereas the di-crotonic acid methyl ester reacts with complete inversion. Fig. 9.3. Poly(vinyl alcohol) has the structure 10.67. Poly(vinyl acetate) is the fully esterified derivative of polyfvinyl alcohol), in which the -OH groups are replaced by -OCOCH3 groups. As indicated in Table 10.5, commercial polyvinyl sizes are effectively copolymers of polyfvinyl acetate) and polyfvinyl alcohol) that vary in the degree of saponification of the ester groups. These products may comprise 100% of either polymer, or combinations of the two monomers in any proportions. Crotonic acid (2-butenoic acid), widely used in the preparation of resins, may also be a component. This compound exhibits cis-trans isomerism (Scheme 10.17). The solid trans form is produced readily by catalysed rearrangement of the liquid cis isomer. [Pg.98]

With fram-crotonic acid methyl ester, dimethylsulfoxonium methylide forms a cyclopropane stereoselectively (Figure 9.3, bottom). Therein, the methyl group and the COzMe group retain the trans orientation they had in the crotonic ester. Thus, the fnms-crotonic ester is cyclopropanated with complete retention of the configuration. [Pg.349]

Crotonic Add n (trans-2-butenoic acid, trans- P methacrylic acid) CH3-CH=CHCOOH. A white crystalline solid prepared by the oxidation of crotonaldehyde. It forms copolymers with vinyl acetate, used as hot-melt adhesives. Esters of crotonic acid are used as plasticizers for acrylic and cellulosic plastics. [Pg.183]

Attachment of a crotonate chain to the alcohol (78), through a mixed carbonate ester, sets up the intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction in the synthesis of podophylotoxin.111 The starting benzocyclobutenol (78) was procured by the sequence of steps shown in Scheme 16. A similar route using a carboxylic ester, in place of the nitrile (76), for the benzyne cyclization gave a mixture of cis- and fra/u-benzocyclo-butenes but ester hydrolysis led to the pure trans acid (77).112... [Pg.501]

The bark of Croton eluteria (Euphorbiaceae) yields, on steam distillation, cascarilla essential oil which is used as a tonic. The main component of the acid fraction of this oil is cascarillic acid ([aJo -10.5°, methyl ester), a cyclopropane carboxylic acid (123) (79). The stereochemistry of the cyclopropane ring was established as trans by comparing H-NMR spectra and retention times on gas chromatograms of methyl esters of the synthetic trans- and cw-isomers with those of the natural compound (147). It is interesting that compounds with closely related structures have been found in an algae and in an insect. Dictyopterene A (124) was isolated from the essential oil of algae of the genus Dictyopteris (77) and (Z)-3-decenoic acid from carpet beetle, Anthrenus flavipes, as a sex pheromone (41). [Pg.293]
