Kl, a 27-year-old woman, was admitted to the cardiology unit from the emergency department after she called 911 claiming that she had severe chest pain. Upon arrival in the ED it was noted that her blood pressure was slightly elevated at 143/92 mm Hg, and that she was diaphoretic. She was in otherwise good physical condition, with no previous cardiac history. After a urine toxicology screen was positive for cocaine she admitted that she had smoked several rocks of crack an hour prior to having the chest pain. She said she almost never uses crack, but she s currently really depressed because she has lost her job. 

Cyanide complexes have a venerable history (see CCC S )),1 and find utilization in many industrial processes including as synthetic catalysts e.g., Co cyanides on inorganic supports catalyze alkylene oxide polymerization,187 molecular magnetic materials, in electroplating, and in mining. One of the most accomplished forensic pathologists in the world, Dr. Steven B. Karch is a fellow of several forensic and toxicological societies and has served many years as consultant to both the legal community and the pharmaceutical industry. He has authored several books including one of the most widely used textbooks in the field, Pathology of Drug Abuse, now in its fourth edition, and A Brief History of Cocaine, now in its second edition (also available through CRC Press).

It explained to her why Alanna s colds and sore throats so often developed into pneumonia or bronchitis, and why she experienced asthma attacks for no apparent reason. This awakening also prompted her to examine her own history of chemical exposures.

One study on toxicity of phycocyanin from Spirolina platensis reported no adverse effects.39 There is little other data available on toxicology but no toxic effects would be expected in view of the long history of algal consumption.
