Since the late 1980s, there has been a proliferation of new potential reduced-exposure products (PREPs), promoted by the industry with the claims of reduced harm, in all the four categories that were summarized earlier (Stratton et al. 2001 Hatsukami et al. 2002, 2005). These include (a) modified tobacco products, such as several denicotinized brands and reduced TSNA emission cigarettes (b) chewing gum impregnated with tobacco (c) smokeless tobacco products with claimed reduced nitrosamine levels and (d) cigarette-like products (carbon-heated smoking devices). [Pg.75]

The law mandates a 90-day prior notice, known as pre-manufacture notice (PMN), to be submitted to the US EPA before production or import of a new chemical substance for a non-exempt commercial purpose. Any chemical which is not listed on the Inventory of existing chemicals is considered new for the purpose of PMN. Eight product categories are exempt from TSCA s regulatory authorities. These are, pesticides, tobacco, nuclear material. [Pg.914]

Cans with replaceable closures for such products as dry foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals, tobacco, solvents, liquid fuels and paint. These usually contain an appreciable amount of oxygen. Tinplate closures for bottles and jars made of non-metallic materials may also be considered in this category. [Pg.504]

Four insecticides constituted the majority of use of slightly toxic products on major field crops (Table VI). Additions to the data presented in the Table are 800 lbs of phosmet applied to alfalfa and 1,800 lbs of diazlnon and 600 lbs of malathion applied to tobacco. The major fungicide or other chemicals in the slightly toxic category were 25,100 lbs of maleic hydrazide and 8,400 lbs of metalaxyl applied to tobacco and 800 and 5,100 lbs of carboxin applied to soybeans and small grains, respectively. [Pg.416]

The revised procedures include a list of regulated articles which may be introduced without a permit, but simply following notification of the BBEP Director. Principally six plant species have been placed in the notification category, corn, cotton, potato, soybean, tobacco, and tomato. It is anticipated that additional plant species will be placed in this list as the USDA gains additional experience. In addition to being on the above list, a number of other criteria are necessary for a product to fall under the notification umbrella. The criteria are spelled out in great detail in the Federal Register notice. [Pg.50]
