The cis-1,4-polyisoprene has very low crystallinity, low Tm ( 28°C) and Tg (-73 C) values, and is an excellent elastomer over a temperature range including room temperature. More than two billion pounds per year of cis-1,4-polyisoprene are used in the U.S. for tires, coated fabrics, molded articles, adhesives, rubber bands, and other elastomeric applications. Trans-1,4-polyisoprene known in commerce as gutta percha is harder than natural rubber since it can crystallize to a greater degree due to symmetry and has relatively high T (74 C) and Tg (-58°C) values. [Pg.73]

The molecules for SA monolayers are chosen or syntliesized according to tire substrate tliat should be coated. Thiol-tenninated entities have been mostly used in connection witli metal surfaces, but also on GaAs [126]. Chloro- and acid-tenninated molecules are most often employed on oxide surfaces of metals or semiconductors. However, tliey have also occasionally been used witli metal surfaces [127]. [Pg.2622]

Electrophoretic deposition (EPD) is anotlier metliod of casting slurries. EPD is accomplished tlirough tire controlled migration of charged particles under an applied electric field. During EPD, ceramic particles typically deposit on a mandrel to fonn coatings of limited tliickness, or tliin tubular shapes such as solid (3 " - AI2O2 electrolytes for sodium-sulfur batteries. [Pg.2767]

Rubber. A thin coating of mica acts as a mold-release compound in the priming of mbber goods such as tires. It prevents the migration of sulfur from the tire to the air bag when the tire is being vulcani2ed (see Tire cords). Mica is also dusted on mbber inner tubes to prevent sticking. [Pg.291]

Nltropropane. As much as 9100 t of 2-nitropropane once were consumed for use in coatings annually. Concern about toxicity and a general movement to low volatile organic compound (VOC) coatings have resulted in almost the complete disappearance of this use for 2-nitropropane. However, derivatives such as 2-meth5l-2-nitro-l-propanol (used in tire cord adhesive) and 2-amino-2-methyl-l-propanol (a pigment dispersant and buffer), have served as an outlet for 2-nitropropane production. [Pg.104]

Most dry-chemical fire-extinguishing materials also function by inhibiting combustion rather than by cooling or by reducing oxygen concentration. The usual dry-chemical material is a bicarbonate, but some phosphates, eg, ammonium, provide a coating that makes the material suitable for use on fires involving soHd combustibles such as mbber tires, wood, and paper. [Pg.102]

Another important apphcation for 4-/ f2 -octylphenol is ia the production of phenoHc resias. Novolak resias based oa 4-/ f2 -octylpheaol are widely used ia the tire iadustry as tackifiers. The tackiaess of these resias biads the many parts of an automobile tire prior to final vulcanization. A specialty use for novolak resias based oa 4-/ f2 -octylpheaol is the productioa of a ziacated resia, which is formulated as a dispersioa ia water and coated onto paper ia combination with eacapsulated leuco dyes to yield carbonless copy paper (see Microencapsulation). Pressure from writing bursts the encapsulated leuco dye, which is converted from its colorless form to its colored form by the ncated resin (53). Novolak resias based oa 4-/ f2 -octylpheaol are also used ia the productioa of specialty printing inks. [Pg.68]

Tire Cord. Melamine resins are also used to improve the adhesion of mbber to reinforcing cord in tires. Textile cord is normally coated with a latex dip solution composed of a vinylpyridine—styrene—butadiene latex mbber containing resorcinol—formaldehyde resin.. The dip coat is cured prior to use. The dip coat improves the adhesion of the textile cord to mbber. Further improvement in adhesion is provided by adding resorcinol and hexa(methoxymethyl) melamine [3089-11 -0] (HMMM) to the mbber compound which is in contact with the textile cord. The HMMM resin and resorcinol cross-link during mbber vulcanization and cure to form an interpenetrating polymer within the mbber matrix which strengthens or reinforces the mbber and increases adhesion to the textile cord. Brass-coated steel cord is also widely used in tires for reinforcement. Steel belts and bead wire are common apphcations. Again, HMMM resins and resorcinol [108-46-3] are used in the mbber compound which is in contact with the steel cord to reinforce the mbber and increase the adhesion of the mbber to the steel cord. This use of melamine resins is described in the patent Hterature (49). [Pg.331]

Insoluble Sulfur. In natural mbber compounds, insoluble sulfur is used for adhesion to brass-coated wire, a necessary component in steel-belted radial tires. The adhesion of mbber to the brass-plated steel cord during vulcanization improves with high sulfur levels ( 3.5%). Ordinary rhombic sulfur blooms at this dose level. Crystals of sulfur on the surface to be bonded destroy building tack and lead to premature failure of the tire. Rubber mixtures containing insoluble sulfur must be kept cool (<100°C) or the amorphous polymeric form converts to rhombic crystals. [Pg.224]

The carcass ply/pHes coat compouad fuactioas are basically the same as the steel breaker compouad. Normally ia the steel belted PCT the ply is textile cord of polyester or rayoa fabrics which are soft and flexible. The tmck radial steel tire normally uses a steel cord ply. Earthmover tires are of two basic constmctions, ie, radial usiag steel and bias usiag textiles (see Tire cords). [Pg.247]

Other Reinforcement Ma.teria.Is. Other materials that have been used in tire compounds for reinforcement are chopped wire (brass-coated), cotton and nylon flock, chopped nylon strands, polyethylene, zinc oxide, and chopped Kevlar. Most of these materials have very limited apphcation and some are obsolete. Others are used more extensively in soHd mbber industrial tires than in pneumatics. [Pg.250]

Introduced successfully for tires in 1967, glass fibers had properties that made them very attractive for use in tires (5,8). The britdeness of glass fibers, however, imposed some limitations on the final tine cord properties because of the requirement that each fiber be individually coated with a mbbery adhesive to avoid interfilament damage during fabrication and use. This additional treatment step is introduced at the fiber manufacturing stage. For several years fiber glass was used extensively in bias-belted and radial tires, but was ultimately replaced by steel belts in radial tires. [Pg.83]
