Tincture of cochineal

Cut the materials up finely and macerate them for 8 days in 6 gallons of alcohol (50%). Stir frequently. Add 40 gallons of alcohol (95%) and 8 gallons of sugar syrup. Add water to make up to 100 gallons total volume. Color reddish brown with caramel and tincture of cochineal. 

Storm s Speci c. Take 2 ounces street spirits of nitre, 1-i drachms oil of cu-bebs, 2 ounces balsam of copaiba, 1 drocbci oil of turpentine, 20 drops oil of cinnamon, 3 ounces mucilage of gum-arabic, ami su i-cient tincture of cochineal to color. This preparation is preferred by many to the capsules. 

Compound Tincture of Kino. This is made in the same way as other tinctures (see JS O. 35), with tho following ingredients 1 drachm each powdered opium, kmo, and cochineal U draenms each camphor and cloves 1 fluid ounce aromatic spirit of ammonia. aud 1 pint alcohol. 

Compotmd Tincture of Cardamom. Take 6 drachms cardamom, 2 drachma caraway, 5 drachms cinnamon, 1 drachm cochineal, all in moderately fine powder mix together, and moisten with i fluid ounce diluted alcohol pack it in a cylindrical percolator, and di lace, with dilated alcohol, 6 fluid ounces of tincture. Lastly mix this with 2 troy ounces clarified honey, and filter through paper. (U. S. Ph.)... 

In nitric acid medium, the precipitation of uranyl phosphate is incomplete. Uranyl monohydrogen phosphate is insoluble in water and in an acetic acid solution. It is soluble in mineral acid medium. These points explain the use of the acetic buffer to carry out the precipitation. One may also use uranyl acetate instead of nitrate, but the former is less stable than the latter. The titration is performed at about t = 80°C. The indicators are either cochineal tincture as internal indicator or potassium ferrocyanide as an external one. Cochineal tincture is an acid-base indicator. It is obtained by the extraction of cochineal by alcohol. The principal application of this precipitation reaction occurs in the field of analytical biochemistry. More precisely, it is the determination of phosphates in urine. Although this procedure is superseded by colorimetric methods, it remains an interesting replacement method.
