These anodes are used extensively in electrogalvanizing, tin electroplating, electrochemical production of copper foil for printed circuit boards, and electrowinning of copper and zinc [91-95]. The application of oxide-coated anodes to sodium sulfate electrolysis so far is small and is not a major driver of electrode development programs. However, environmental concerns associated with byproduct or waste sodium sulfate, along with possible imbalances in the demand for chlorine and caustic soda are enough to maintain interest in the technique. 

As an example of the problem, intermittent circuit failures have been observed on circuit boards containing socketed devices when the receptacle socket has gold contacts and the plug-in device has solder or tin electroplate contacts. Electroplated tin—Electroplated Sn exhibits excellent solderability and corrosion resistance, but is prone to Sn whisker growth. Thin, hairlike whiskers grow from the surface and pose as a potential reliability problem due to electrical shorts caused in the field. Heat fusing or reflow is used to eliminate tin whiskers [53]. 

Lucent Technologies introduced a power system that produces SMC-SMW series d.c.-to-d.c. converter power modules using its patented SnTech pure-tin electroplating process. Components for the power device are supplied by National Semiconductor and Fairchild with a SnTech lead finish. 

Annealed tin electroplate— Annealing heat treatments have been found to only be useful on matte-Sn platings. Bright-Sn platings tend to blister when annealed. Annealing is often an impractical solution but should be considered for matte-Sn plated structures where annealing at 150-200°C for an hour or more is practical.
