VLDPEs, with their very good low-temperature impact properties, are of interest in frozen food packaging. By 1998 the market for UHMWPE materials was estimated at 65 000t.p.a. of which Ticona had about half the market share. 

Ethylene-cyclo-olefin copolymers have been known since 1954 (DuPont USP2 721 189) but these materials only became of importance in the late 1990s with the development of copolymers of ethylene and 2-norbomene by Hoechst and Mitsui using metallocene technology developed by Hoechst. The product is marketed as Topas by Ticona. By adjustment of the monomer ratios polymers with a wide range of Tg values may be obtained including materials that are of potential interest as thermoplastic elastomers. This section considers only thermoplastic materials, cyclo-olefins of interest as elastomers are considered further in Section 11.10. 

The Ticona materials are prepared by continuous polymerisation in solution using metallocene catalysts and a co-catalyst. The ethylene is dissolved in a solvent which may be the comonomer 2-norbomene itself or another hydrocarbon solvent. The comonomer ratio in the reactor is kept constant by continuous feeding of both monomers. After polymerisation the catalyst is deactivated and separated to give polymers of a low residual ash content and the filtration is followed by several degassing steps with monomers and solvents being recycled. 

By the late 1990s the main manufacturers were the American-based Du Pont, the Japanese-based Polyplastics and the European-based Ticona with similar plant capacities totally some 60% of the global capacity which is of the order of 600 000 t.p.a. Among at least eight plants in Asia those of Mitsubishi Gas and Asahi were significant as was also that of BASF (see also Section 19.3.7).

Aromatic polyesters that do not contain any flexible structural units are often nonmeltable or extremely high melting polymers that cannot be processed. Copolymerization is a way to obtain processable wholly aromatic polyesters The Tm versus copolyester composition curve is a U-shaped curve exhibiting a minimum that is generally well below the Tm of corresponding homopolymers. Liquid crystalline aromatic polyesters, for instance, are usually copolymers.72 An example is Ticona s Vectra, a random copolyester containing 4-oxybenzoyl and 6-oxy-2-naphthoyl units in ca. 70 30 mol ratio. The background to the forthcoming harmonisation of standards and testing procedures for plastics in contact with water is outlined and a brief discussion is presented on the expected unified tests, the synoptic documents in which raw materials, which pass these tests, will be included and the process optimisation carried out by Ticona to conform to the new requirements. The formulation for Impet from Ticona (a Division of the Hoechst Celanese Corporation) is described in United States Patent 6 020414 [43], The latter discloses toughened PET formulations based on an ethylene-alkyl acrylate copolymer and an ethylene-alkyl methacrylate copolymer. The crux of this patent is to use a combination of an elastomeric terpolymer functionalized with glycidyl acrylate or glycidyl methacrylate and an alkyl acrylate or alkyl methacrylate (the latter forming the major part of the combination - up to 40wt%).
