Thrust damage

Rotor Seals To balance the thrust on the rotor, usually there are one or two labyrinth-type seals on the rotor. These seals often are damaged if there is dust in the incoming fluid or gas, and wear on the backside seal causes serious upsets in thrust-bearing loads. Provisions are available for coUecting and disposing of the dust which tends to accumulate in the seal so as to protect the seal from serious erosion.

The rubber or plastic outlet tube should be depression-free and lead via an adapter into the receiver flask (see below) which must be sited in the fume cupboard, and it is advised that this delivery tube be additionally supported by means of a retort stand and clamp. This latter precaution is necessary since the initial force of ammonia release may cause it to flex with considerable thrust which may lead to apparatus damage. 

To prevent damage to the membranes, they should be properly shimmed and the thrust ring correctly installed (see Chapter 4.3.3 and Question 17.3.4). The shims and thrust ring will minimize or prevent movement of the modules during start-up and shut-down of the RO system.

A thrust block may be defined, for our purpose, as a ceramic anchor, set in the substrate to prevent the movement of a brick facing placed over it. It is used to direct the expansion of a brick lining (or surfacing) in one direction only, rather than in both. On a floor, this may be used to prevent damage to the capping and brick lining of a trench or pit when it is undesirable to place an expansion joint adjacent to it.
