Ring-correction

Corrections for gauche configurations and cis isomers are given in the footnotes to Table 6. Corrections for ring structures are given in Table 8. The sources of the ring correction terms are discussed in Section IV.

By contrast, we do not use Benson group increments , a generally powerful thermochemical technique summarized in the volume by S. W. Benson himself, Thermochemical Kinetics, 2nd edition, Wiley, New York, 1976, and used in many thermochemical chapters throughout the Patai series. For the classes of compounds discussed in the current chapter, we believe the necessary number of parameters (included to reflect electrostatic interactions, proximity effects, steric repulsions and ring corrections) is excessive. 

Haworth structures are easy to draw and unambiguous in depicting configurations,14 but they also do not show the spatial relationships of groups attached to other rings correctly. For this reason conformational formulas of the type described in Section 2 and shown in Fig. 4-4 are used most often in this book. 

Table 2.5 defines the 40 molecular descriptors and provides their values. Figure 2.1 provides further definition of the different types of molecular fragments used while Figure 2.2 provides further definition of the hydrogen bonding and biphenyl ring corrections. Simamora and Yalkowsky (1994) consider the values in parentheses in Table 2.5 insignificant, based on the statistical analysis used to derive the molecular descriptor values. 

The chlorocyclopropane molecule contains three groups and a ring correction. The two methylene groups are identical C-(H)2(C)2. The third structural group, which includes the chlorine, is C-(C)2(H)(C1). The correction for ring strain would be close to that for cyclopropane. 

To prevent damage to the membranes, they should be properly shimmed and the thrust ring correctly installed (see Chapter 4.3.3 and Question 17.3.4). The shims and thrust ring will minimize or prevent movement of the modules during start-up and shut-down of the RO system. 

The unsaturated ketone does indeed have an alkcnc and a carbonyl group. The unsaturated cyclic acid has 16 - 10 = 6 divided by 2 = 3 DBEs and it has one alkene, one C=0 and one ring. Correct. The aromatic ether has 16-8 = 8 divided by 2 gives 4 DBEs and it has three double bonds in the ring and the ring itself. Correct again.
