Three Types of Processes

In the previous section, we discussed the term activation when applied to saturated compounds and concluded that the cleavage of an ordinary bond (e.g., C-H) can be a result of such activation, and in many cases, we might consider the activation and splitting as synonymous. We wish to describe here the classification that is based on types of interaction between the alkane and metal complex. [Pg.11]

It is therefore not surprising that the reactivities of arenes and alkanes in electrophilic substitution reactions are very different, with the former being much more active. At the same time, the mechanism of the interaction (oxidative addition) of both saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons with complexes of metals in a low oxidation state is in principle the same. The reactivities of arenes and alkanes in oxidative addition reactions with respect to low-valent metal complexes therefore usually differ insignificantly. Furthermore, a metal complex via the oxidative addition mechanism can easily cleave the C-H bond in olefin or acetylene. [Pg.12]

Thus according to our classification, the first group includes reactions involving true , organometalhc metal complex activation of the C-H bonds. We call this type of activation trae , because only in this case, the closest contact between metal ion and the C-H bond (i.e., normal (ybond between M and C) is realized. A molecule of C-H compound enters in the form of an organyl cr-ligand into the coordination sphere of the metal complex. [Pg.12]

Very weak adducts of metal complexes with alkanes (or alkyl groups), in which the C-H bond is directly coordinated to the metal (I-l, 1-2) or its ligands (1-3), do not necessarily lead to subsequent cleavage of the C-H bond. However, [Pg.13]

The decarbonylation can be effected (1) thermally, (2) photolytically, and (3) chemically, by using a metal complex such as Rh(PPh3)3Cl. The three types of processes will be considered in turn. [Pg.105]

There are only a few cases where the dissolution of an iron oxide by all three types of processes under comparable conditions has been investigated. Banwart et al. (1989) found that at pH 3, the rate of dissolution of hematite increased in the order, protonation < complexation < reduction with a factor of 350 between the extremes. A similar factor (400) was found for goethite (Zinder et al, 1986) (Fig. 12.15). Hematite dissolution processes were also compared in the pH range similar to that found in neutral environments (Fig. 12.16). Again, dissolution by simple protonation was extremely slow, whereas reduction, especially when aided by Fe complexing ligands, was particularly effective (Banwart et al, 1989). It can, thus, be concluded that reduction, particularly when assisted by protonation and complexation will be the main mechanism for Fe transport in global ecosystems. [Pg.323]

At this point it is necessary to consider the mechanism of electron-transfer luminescence in solutions which cannot involve ion-radical annihilation because both cation and anion of the fluorescer are not formed. Such emission can be achieved by treating anion radicals with chemical oxidants or electrochemically under conditions where the corresponding cation cannot be produced, and it may also be achieved by electrochemical reduction of cations without producing the corresponding anion. In addition to triplets, three types of processes and pathways have been proposed to help explain why such emission occurs. These may be described as (7) impurities, (2) ion-radical aggregates, and (5) heterogeneous electron transfer. It is evident63 that impurities,... [Pg.447]

Describe the three types of processes used in extractive metallurgy. [Pg.16]

The three types of processes considered are a solids process - such as a process producing lime, a solid-fluid process - such as a powdered-coffee process, and a fluid process - such as a methanol-synthesis process. No sharp division exists among these process types so that you must use some judgment to classify a process. Table 2.6 contains average cost factors for these process types. The factors for process equipment depend on the material of constmction. Thus, Table 2.7... [Pg.64]

In preparing fine particles of inorganic metal oxides, the hydrothermal method consists of three types of processes hydrothermal synthesis, hydrothermal oxidation, and hydrothermal crystallization. Hydrothermal synthesis is used to synthesize mixed oxides from their component oxides or hydroxides. The particles obtained are small, uniform crystallites of 0.3-200 jim in size and dispersed each other. Pressures, temperatures, and mineralizer concentrations control the size and morphology of the particles. In the hydrothermal oxidation method, fme oxide particles can be prepared from metals, alloys, and intermciallic compounds by oxidation with high temperature and pressure solvent, that is, the starting metals are changed into fine oxide powders directly. For example, the solvothermal oxidation of cerium metal in 2-mcthoxycthanol at 473-523 K yields ultrafine ceria particles (ca 2 nm). [Pg.70]

Three types of processes responsible which may lead to this situation and in which inorganic free radicals are involved are described. [Pg.26]

Some complexes, such as the [RuCl2(dppm)2] (dppm = bis(diphenylphosphine)-metane) can be interconverted by all three types of processes photochemical, thermal, and redox reactions [34] ... [Pg.331]

Other pumping steps are possible, for instance, in chain reactions and with other hydrogen- and fluorine-containing reaction partners. Extremely high gains have been found in this laser 124>. As outlined in Section 8, three types of processes have to be included for a full description of this laser formation of the active HF molecules, relaxation and deexcitation reactions, and radiative processes. Each process has to be considered as function of the vibrational quantum number v and rotational quantum number J. However, even if only the -dependence is included, the set of differential equations describing the temporal behavior of the system includes some sixty rate equations. All the rates in addition are more or less dependent on J. For obvious reasons, no account of the rotational effects has been published so far. In spite of all the rate information that has been accumulated, this aspect has not been explored sufficiently but may be important. The considerable complexity of this laser system calls for very extensive collaboration of theoreticians and experimentalists. [Pg.33]

Basically, there are three types of process by which diazoalkanes dissociate into dinitrogen and a carbene, namely thermolysis, photolysis, and catalysis with a transition metal or a metal complex. [Pg.315]

The solar flux impinging on the Earth-atmosphere system, averaged over a year, can be represented as 100 units. Three types of processing systems are used to extract oil from oil-bearing materials expeller pressing, prepress solvent extraction, and direct solvent extraction. Only prepress solvent extraction and direct solvent extraction, which remove the oil from the conditioned, prepared seed with an organic solvent, will be discussed here (see Figure 14.10.1). Oil-bearing materials have to be prepared for extraction to separate the crude oil from the... [Pg.935]

From these cases it is clear how the problem has been simplified, at least quite easily for the first three types of process into a lime-invariant case, and the relative reliability is reduced to the consideration for a single parameter distribution function. This means that one has to evaluate the probability that Zy is less than zero. [Pg.2043]
