Thiopental drug interactions

Valerian (Valerian officinalis). No drug interactions have been reported, but animal studies suggest that valerian, used as a sedative and sleep aid, might increase the effects of barbiturates such as pentobarbital, hexo-barbital, and thiopental. 

RMP can also result in serious drug-drug interactions. Proformd hypotension has been reported in a patient who was treated with two 600-mg doses of rifampin for prophylaxis of infection before surgery [54 ]. A significant and profound drop in arterial blood pressure can occur when patients on RMP receive propofol. However, this phenomenon is not seen with thiopental. 

A mechanism involving initial carbanion attack to give an adduct has been proposed, on the basis of product characterization, for reaction of the nitroprusside anion, [Fe(CN)s(NO)] , with 2,5-pentanedione (acacH) or with its 3-methyl derivative. Reactions between nitroprusside and thiobar-biturates have been examined as models for drug-drug interactions between the potent vasodilator nitroprusside and the anaesthetic thiopental [the sodium salt of (35) with R = MeCH2-, R = MeCH2CH2CHMe-],... 

In cases in which drugs exert their actions by interacting with specific receptors, structural modification dramatically alters the expected effects. However, not all drugs act by interacting with specific receptors. For example, general anesthetics such as thiopental, halothane, cyclopropane, and nitrous oxide have vastly dissimilar structures.
