Thermal properties of carbon nanotubes

Besides the electronic and spectroscopic properties of carbon nanotubes, their thermal behavior is of interest, too. Most of aU a distinct anisotropy should be observed. The thermal behavior is predominantly governed by the phonon proper-hes of the sample. With the density of phonon states being available from theoretical considerations, it is possible to compare these expectation values directly to the experimental results. Again, however, it is true that exact assignment and explana-hon of phenomena require measurements of single nanotubes whose structure has been determined. This is some challenge for the time being. [Pg.216]

Carbon nanotubes have attracted huge attention ever since they were discovered because of their unique structures. The studies are mainly focused on the mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties of carbon nanotubes and the applications of their novel properties. Fluid behavior inside carbon nanotubes and fluid transport through carbon nanotubes have been investigated only recently and novel fluidic phenomena, such as abnormally low flow resistance, have been observed. Carbon nanotubes are usually synthesized by arc-discharge, laser ablation, and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) [4]. The arc-discharge and laser ablation methods involve the condensation of carbon... [Pg.1412]

In Chapter 7, the thermal properties of carbon nanotubes are discussed by M. Osman, A. Srivastava and D. Srivastava. The authors first present the physical structure of nanotubes and their electrical properties. Then, theoretical analytical approaches to thermal conductivity and specific heat calculations are introduced. This is followed by a review of the recent experimental measurement of thermal conductivity of single-wall nanotubes (SWNTs) and multiwall nanotubes. They also present a molecular dynamical simulation approach and its application to the investigation of thermal conductivity of SWNTs, Y-junction nanotubes and heat pulse propagation in SWNTs. [Pg.3]
