The anisotropy of the electron effective masses at the energy minima of the CB reflects its symmetry. For indirect-band-gap semiconductors, like group-IV crystals (see Table3.4), the CB has equivalent energy minima along the six equivalent 100 directions for Cdiam and silicon, and along the four equivalent 111 directions for germanium (these directions are the same for the reciprocal and direct lattices). Resolving Power (RP) A measurement of how effectively a mass analyzer can distinguish between two peaks at different, but similar m/z. Mathematically, the formula M/ AM is used, where M is the m/z value for one of the peaks and AM is the spacing, in unified atomic mass units, between the peaks. Most commonly, AM is the mass resolution, either via the 10% valley or FWHM definitions (see below). (Note that the definition used will affect the resolving power calculated.) Resolving power of 500-1000 approximately corresponds to unit resolution (e.g., at m/z 700 and FWHM resolution of 0.7, RP = 1000). [Pg.15]

In the linear approximation, since the cone is elliptic (see discussion in the preceding section) two steep sides (see Figure 14b) exist in the immediate vicinity of the apex of the cone. As one moves away from the apex along these steep directions, real reaction valleys (as in Figure 14a rather than approximate ones) develop, leading to final photoproduct minima. Thus in reality the first-order approximation will break down at larger distances, and there will be more complicated cross sections and more than two relaxation channels. Also there are symmetric cases (such as H3) in which the tip of the cone can never possibly be described by Eq. The tremendous expansion of cooperage that took place in the Interior Valley during this period was a direct result of the large increases in table wine demand.
