The isolated perfused lung has also been used for studies of BaP metabolism (80, 83, 470, 481). In this system, the metabolism of BaP was enhanced by exposure of rats to cigarette smoke or 3-methylcholanthrene. Ferric oxide or crude air particulates inhibited the rate of metabolism of BaP when administered to the isolated perfused lung. However, pretreatment with particulates caused an increase in metabolism. In these studies, dihydrodiols and phenolic metabolites were observed, as in the lung culture studies.
